Those of us who oppose the I-45 expansion are not just opponents of a bad project, we are...

TxDOT has been directly responsible for splitting one working-class community, Fifth Ward, twice by running two major freeways through it — Interstate 10 running east to west and Highway 59 north to south. Each time, we have lost hundreds of families, homes and businesses and suffered devastating social and financial impacts. We are fighting for a fair, transparent and evidence-based process by which regional infrastructure needs are identified and solutions are chosen.

I-45’s original harms to communities — flooding, housing loss, pollution, fragmentation — must be addressed today. Deserved reparations and improvements should not be bound to a project that will cause even more harm and continue I-45’s legacy of environmental racism. We are not just opponents of a bad project, we are community members who believe better is possible and well-deserved.

Jasmine Gaston, displaced Clayton Homes resident, and Joetta Stevenson, president of Super Neighborhood 55
