The state government says work is underway on the first stages of its plan to build 400 extra public houses, while advocates say it's a good start but so much more housing is urgently needed.

Work has began on the first stages of the South Australian government's plan to build 400 new public houses as advocates say the housing shortage is worsening by the day.The state government has signed contracts to build 44 new homesThere are currently 17,000 people on the waiting list for public housing in South Australia, with nearly 4,000 of those in category one, deemed in urgent need of shelter.

Out of the 400 new homes, 200 will be built in greater Adelaide, 150 in regional areas and 50 will be built for people experiencing homelessness. Ms Macdonald said more hostels and supported accommodation was needed and that rent relief was crucial to prevent more people becoming homeless. Human Services Minister Nat Cook said people in the most-urgent category include those who have fled domestic violence, children, people with disabilities, elderly people and people with complex mental health problems.

"We live in a great state, in a First World country, and we can't have a situation where people literally are homeless. We can afford to do more," Premier Peter Malinauskas said.

I am sick of the ABC’s current adoption of clickbait headings. Say which state!

The housing market need not be exploitative and cruel. In Vienna 60% of housing is public housing. Finland unconditionally houses all of their homeless. Neglect of the homeless is an active choice made to protect the profits of a select few.

Clearly the govt backed landlord model has proven a failure when they can’t supply affordable housing for the poors. Time for govt to stop subsidising landlords and supply housing for everyone who needs a home

People can not live in submarines the federal government gave away 850 million dollars to the French contractor because of Forfeiting the contract .

Mickleham still empty DanielAndrewsMP

Ohhh their generosity is overwhelming? 44 new public houses signed off on with a waiting list of 17,000? That's pathetic. And in the meantime my next-door neighbours rent just increased $50 p/wk for a 100% owned beat-up unmaintained 45-year-old unit. I feel I'm next.

44 🤣🤣🤣

In Diepenveen 'My Home Town' people help people, there is no us and them like in this shit hole, it is community, it is respect for your fellow human.

It’s amazing they knocked over some housing trust places in my neighbourhood. One home had sixteen townhouses built on it. Sixteen! Imagine if it hadn’t been sold to private development and used for low income families

Um, a public house is a pub. Public housing is different!

Make no mistake, there are no left wing parties in Australia. NONE. There are bourgeoise upper middle class wealthy elite who like to virtue signal about identity politics and regressive environmental policies. They are not left wing dont help neither people, or the environment

Says something really bad and incompetent about the government that the housing gap is so large and homelessness is growing. Buy some hotel room space to fill in the need until public housing apartments can be purchased or built.

Just make sure they go in shit areas, please.

Still not enough but a good start.

A lot of HT houses have been demolished in the Western suburbs, land sold to developers, no genuine affordable housing put back. This pushes people away from supports and community. Need real affordable housing in every suburb.

So much Gov owned land they could release to developers at good prices to get things moving but nope.

Disgusting is the only word for this failure to look after those in dire need

Make law: ' Every billionaire who builds a public house facility gets a stone statue in a park. With a plaque: 'decent human, lived well and was loved' it stays in the park forever. '

There was a time, 50's 60's 70's, when suburbs were built, not houses.

my maths says that for that to solve it it's 386 people per house. Big families these days

I think possibly a couple more houses are needed but I'm not that good at math so

Sure that’s gonna help
