Despite having the means to pay, many new immigrants struggle to access good rental accommodations in Manitoba.

Sitting in their own house — which they were able to afford just 18 months after their arrival — Femi and Omolara Aloba say it feels good to be settled. When they first arrived they had money to cover rent for a year, but landlords told them they didn't qualify to because they lacked Canadian credit or work history.

Landlords wanted Canadian credit history, Canadian pay stubs, and Canadian work experience — or, in place of those things, a guarantor in Canada. "Whether they came as a refugee, whether they came as a provincial nominee, international student — anyone who doesn't have a credit report, it does make it tricky."The Alobas said they had resigned themselves to booking an Airbnb, but were eventually saved by a family friend.

"I found that in a number of cases, students have to be — I use the words 'stepping-down' from their standards," he said.

It has always been like that.....

It can take the better part of a lifetime to amass the wherewithal to buy a home.

It’s really hard to be sympathetic when people that have grown up and contributed to this country their whole lives are completely priced out of the market.

I don’t care, a single gram, for the struggles of ‘newcomers’.

Who cares no one else here can either

Yes. My Belgian ancestors came to Canada facing the same challenges in the late 1940's. Had the exact same issues. And found a way. Without handouts.

'It sucks': Former NFL player is struggling to find a home in Vancouver

Forget about the newcomers..... what about the current citizens who cannot afford to put food on the table because of the increase of rent that don't get the same benefits and advantages newcomers recieve? let's do have that conversation of how we neglect our own people 🙏

I know many people that will ONLY rent to newcomers, and I don't blame them; They often aren't home because they're working a job and often going to school as well, have a small social circle and so don't host parties, and are timely to pay out of fear of consequences

It’s also near impossible for self employed Canadians, oh and the housing market has been grossly over priced since 2016, another Trudeau scandal. Ban all foreigners from purchasing in Canada. Close ALL the loopholes too.

Every newcomer went through this Cope

Um. Neither can the rest of us! This isn't a racial thing. It's an affordability vs greed thing.

The government should act as guarantors since they brought them into the country. Punishment for screwing a landlord should be deportation. Beneficial to everyone involved.

So do many Manitobans

Just like Canadians. No affordable housing in any Province or Territories.

It must because of RaCiSms! Call the police!

means we are filled up. no more room

And? So?

I know people that exclusively rent to newcomers because they are often desperate to make sure they pay up for fear of consequences Landlords are leaving money on the table if they don't seek out new canadians to sign contracts with

good, go home

All Canadians CBC. New, old, everybody. Just stop.

“I found that in a number of cases, students have to be stepping down from their standards” Then stay where you are? Expectations too high?

We should run an experiment. Get 2 cute swedish girls to pose as new immigrants looking for a rental but have no credit rating or Canadian experience. Let's see if the same rules apply.

So is everyone else
