BC Housing has accelerates efforts to secure new housing for dismantled encampment residents

British Columbia’s acting attorney general says the province was “clear” with Vancouver officials that the Crown corporation responsible for subsidized housing does not have enough spaces available for people who are being told to dismantle their tents along a street in the city’s Downtown Eastside.

Vancouver fire Chief Karen Fry ordered tents set up along Hastings Street sidewalks dismantled last month, saying there was an extreme fire and safety risk. Community advocacy groups, including the Vancouver Area of Drug Users and Pivot Legal Society, have said clearing the encampment violates a memorandum of understanding between the city, the B.C. government and Vancouver’s park board, because people are being told to move without being offered suitable housing.

The province is not involved in the fire chief’s order or the enforcement of local bylaws, which prohibit structures on sidewalks, but it is “bringing all of BC Housing’s resources to bear to do what we can to secure housing for people, Rankin said.

If its that clear, why let foreigners and institutions trample on our insufficient stock. Ridiculous. It's not racism to protect your citizens. So many countries have restrictions on real estate purchases by foreigners.

Thanks Captain Obvious. The real story is the government’s total and continued failure to help the most vulnerable in Canadian society.

Must be hard to hide poverty, when the top of the pyramid is fine dining in the 21st century.

Everyone not from Vancouver should be given a ticket home to start with. And this city has been spending about half a billion dollars PER YEAR on the DTES for years....and no housing? Here we are. Talk about a huge waste of working taxpayers $$$.

Ban 4N & non-resident ownership. Ban Airbnb & like platforms. Cut immigration & 4N students. Ban REITs that aren't purpose built rental. Raise interest rates. Tax 4N capital used to purchase real estate at income tax rates. Do ANYTHING about 💰 laundering. End toxic demand.

Homeless We know how to solve this. Build subsidized housing. House the homeless.

These encampments are EVERYWHERE IN CANADIAN COMMUNITIES and the media is not concerned to report it......look on YOUTUBE....

Did those people ever consider moving to where this is housing available?
