Under the Northern Territory's new rental system for remote public housing tenants, Teresa Timber's rent will leap by more than $200 a week. She's one of thousands facing the same problem.

Ms Timber, who has lived in the same four-bedroom house since 1987, discovered her rent would leap from $78 per fortnight — automatically deducted out of her disability pension — to $560 per fortnight.Belyuen residents say they were disappointed by the news.

Are we to believe this lady has lived alone in her heavily subsidised 4 bedroom home for 44 years in a region plagued by overcrowding and a lack of housing? Or that no other household residents can make any contribution from their welfare payments? Better reporting please.

That is a big increase, but a 4 bedroom house should is needed for a family. I would hope that they are offered an alternative before just jacking up the rent like that, but I do think people that are in the system seem to just stay, even when their situation changes
