Many are asking how South Korea, with all its advanced technology, can fail to manage fundamental matters such as housing and drainage, says Steven Borowiec.

. Monsoon downpours occur annually on the Korean peninsula, but this year was different.

This means that even wealthy districts like Gangnam were inundated. In a jaw-dropping photo that has gone viral, a man was pictured sitting on the hood of his car cradling a tablet. His car was angled downward as rain poured all around him, the sinking vehicle acting as an island of last refuge. More than 200,000 banjiha apartments remain in downtown Seoul despite attempts to phase them out following severe floods in 2010 and 2011. This year’s floods highlight howSoldiers carry debris after the floodwater drained from a submerged house following heavy rains in Seoul, South Korea, on Aug 10, 2022.

According to the city government, rains of 30mm or more per hour can cause disasters like floods. Rains of that volume have occurred 3.4 times annually on average over the past 50 years. In 2011, there were eight such downpours, followed by nine in 2013.

Rainwater overwhelms drainage systems. South Korea should be immune?

1 in 50, 100 or 500 years, but we are so lucky to see this happens. I think nothing can be done if rain fall over the designed capacity, unless the design is 10x, 50x more, but who will cater for this?

Once in 500 year ponding. Move on

corrupt country

Rich, developed Sg also unprepared for intense rain...

Soul searching time

Maybe the precipitation is overly heavy due to unpredictable climate changes...

Becos nature doesn't distinguish between rich and poor

Another msm in SG trying to give excuses to ponding in SG? Seoul has more than 450mm of rainfall in less than 24h versus 100+ in sg and since 1959, Bukit Timah area has always seen a flood during heavy downfall.

Every busting city problem, not just Seoul. We ask for it so live with it. Don't blame the climate or Putin...

Easy. Because they don't control the weather

Saw from other news avenues that, litters that choked the drains and drain openings played a part to the failure in the drainage of the flood as well. So ppl, this is another reason to not anyhow litter pls! (Plus it’s disgusting as well.)

And same as their products, from phones to refrigerators, looks good, actually not. They are too small to play big.
