And one is often overlooked

“Demographic demand for housing in Canada is strong — and it’s getting even stronger,” write RBC economists Robert Hogue and Carrie Freestone

But there is another trend in our society that the economists say is often overlooked: the size of our households is shrinking. Since 2016, one-person households have also become more common, so much so that almost 30% of Canadians now live alone. Seniors account for some of this, but the economists say a growing number of young Canadians are also opting to live alone and start their families later.

In the five years leading up to 2021, the average household size fell by 0.02 people. Even this small decline raised the number of households by 140,000 or almost 30,000 a year.Article content

Posthaste: Two things that will protect Canada from a 'full-blown housing crash'Posthaste: Two things that should protect Canada from a 'full-blown housing crash' Bureaucracy and immigration. Try and build a 1400 sq/ft home. 300k for a lot and 200k in taxes, fees and inspections. 500k before labor and materials. The problem with Canada is that it either doesn’t vet prospective immigrants or doesn’t care too. A lot of criminals & thugs are imported and wreak havoc on the citizenry. Canada needs to do a better job of selecting immigrants and repatriating the bad ones. No conflict of interest in this story?
