‘I just want to stay’: the battle to save Glebe’s public housing | MeganGorrey

While some communities fought against public housing, the controversy over the redevelopments in Glebe had assumed the opposite dynamic, Balmain Greens MP Jamie Parker said.

“Over time, I developed relationships with the other tenants. We help each other, we united over the difficulties ... I’ve lived here for 30 years. I’ve never lived anywhere that long in my life. I just want to stay. The group’s secretary, Emily Bullock, who lives in the Franklyn Street estate, said members had urged the government to refurbish the apartment block and fill the vacant units, rather than knock it down.

The agency expects residents of the Wentworth Park Road complex will be relocated in the next 18 months. The replacement block is expected to be completed in about three years. Alistair Sisson, a postdoctoral research fellow in the University of Wollongong’s School of Geography and Sustainable Communities, said the social housing projects failed to consider large residential developments planned for nearby sites, such as Blackwattle Bay and North Eveleigh, which included little to no social housing.

MeganGorrey She’s had more housing stability than renters in a highly sought after location… ‘Three decades ago, Ienna…settled into the steadiest home they’ve ever known – a ground-floor unit in a public housing block, facing Wentworth Park in inner-city Glebe’. Done well. 🤨
