It’s time for paradigm shift in housing policy. Sinn Féin would increase investment in delivery of 20,000 social and affordable homes every year, writes EOBroin

A Sinn Féin Government would increase investment in the delivery of at least 20,000 social and affordable homes every year, says Sinn Féin housing spokesman Eoin Ó Broin. Photograph: PADarragh O’Brien has been Minister for Housing for two years. His housing plan was released a year ago this week.

Figures from the Department of Children indicate that there are more than 500 women and children in Tusla-funded domestic violence refuges. The primary cause of rising homelessness is Governments’ failure to deliver an adequate supply of social and affordable homes. Parliamentary answers also confirm that last year not a single affordable home to purchase was delivered. The target for affordable cost rental in 2021 was just 440 homes, but only 65 were delivered.

In previous years when social and affordable housing failed to meet demand Government relied on the private rental sector to pick up the slack. Despite his claims, Mr O’Brien refuses to scale up public housing delivery to meet social and affordable need. There are active planning permissions for more than 90,000 new homes; there are 20,000 social and affordable homes stuck in Departmental red tape; there are tens of thousands of vacant and derelict properties.

EOBroin I thought the Irish people elected you to look after the IRISH people, not scammers and liars from Africa and Asia

EOBroin all built specifically for refugees and those that couldn't be arsed getting a job

EOBroin Bank 'loans' I presume?

EOBroin Whoes going to build the social houses those looking for them r too lazy to do it when someone keeps handing them a blank cheque. So u r not going to build those houses because there isn't the builders unless those layabouts starts contributing to society instead of always taking

EOBroin Dreamland! Populists

EOBroin Any Economist refusing to examine the Demand side of Supply and Demand is not to be taken seriously. A Govt which insists, at every turn, on championing an Open Border/No Cap on Immigration Policy to the detriment of its own People needs to be called out for the Traitors they are

EOBroin Would they allow the local authorities to collect rent.

EOBroin Paid for by?

EOBroin Just words

EOBroin

EOBroin 20,000 houses a year, free and affordable, they haven’t a snowballs chance in Hell of doing that, just goes to show that they haven’t a clue about economics, don’t forget they’re going to have open borders whilst they’re building all these houses 🙈🙈🙈

EOBroin Which is why they are going to romp home in the next election.

EOBroin But it's SF policy to confiscate current rented stock by stealth. Give current tenant perpetual lease and fix rents at 20% of inflation. Result ....absolutely nobody will invest in Irish property so you just go back to Ballymun. SF are worse than UKIP for stupid policies.

EOBroin More utter shite... The only way we can build 20k social and affordable houses is if we take that capacity out of private house building... We are at full capacity in construction!! More soundbites that will never materialise!

EOBroin Sinn Fein is another pro open borders party. IrelandisFull

EOBroin A lot of Irish will never see these houses. We need to put limits on the numbers of people coming into Ireland and on people arriving to Ireland getting housing and contributing little. IrelandisFull

EOBroin Champagne communist speaks...

EOBroin So do they intend to object less to social housing to increase supply?

EOBroin

EOBroin Will you ever F off Harry Potter. Not a chance. Who will build them for €230,000 - absolute spoofer

EOBroin The party of change 😂

EOBroin Doesn't matter how many homes you build if you don't stop the flow of people arriving here & signing onto the housing lists straight away.

EOBroin How many of those homes would go 2 Irish people? No point voting for a Party if they won't suspend immigration. 50,000 & increasing number of Ukrainians here in a few months who will all need housing. Unending inflow of asylum seekers who will all be given 'free' housing by State

EOBroin What good would that do unless we put a limit on immigration ?

EOBroin 20,000 is no where near what is needed.

EOBroin Literally zero in this piece as to how local authorities and AHBs will manage to build multiple times more homes than they are capable of doing at present other than 'political will' and 'determination'. Laughable

EOBroin Well they can't do any worse the the circus that's in power now

EOBroin Good heavens, yet another Sinn Fein propaganda piece from the Irish Times. The IT is turning into An Phoblacht Light. And the kids on here would have you believe the IT is a government mouthpiece.
