Sutcliffe promises 100K new homes in a decade as part of housing platform ottnews ottawa

Sutcliffe promises 100K homes over the next decade if elected mayorOttawa mayoral candidate Mark Sutcliffe is pledging to streamline the development process to pave the way for 100,000 new homes over the next decade, focusing on intensification within the confines of the Greenbelt.

And he wants to streamline the development process to make it easier to build more homes, faster in order to keep up with Ottawa's population growth. He would allow "limited height exemptions," for residential housing projects where at least 20 per cent of the units are affordable. That would include any office buildings that are converted to residential.

There's been a moratorium on development charges for downtown plans in the past, and he pointed out it spurred more building. Like other mayoral candidates, Sutcliffe wants to cut "red tape" to speed up the approval process to get homes built, and would set up a "one-stop shop" for approving new housing and rental properties. And like other candidates, there are few details available right now about how exactly this would be accomplished.

For who? Canadians are dying in record numbers.

It'll end up just being another 100k luxury condos downtown and million dollar homes for the elite in Barrhaven and Kanata while the middle class suffers. I've seen so many politicians fail on affordable housing because luxury developers run the show in this city.

There’s over 1 million homes sitting empty across Canada, just to sit empty and make money like gold bars in the bank. You know this. Suttcliffe knows this. Building more homes will just lead to more homes sitting empty. How illogical and privileged and entitled.

Very disappointing article. Without any critique it reads like an campaign ad. I hope the other candidates get the same treatment else this is very irresponsible journalism.

city of ottawa already builds 10,000 new housing units annually. this is another dogshit promise made to look like Mark is doing something courageous to address our overlapping crises, when he’s just another status quo Jim Watson in the same beige management pants. m

Will probably use new mayor powers to circumvent environment and in city by-laws

So status quo, City making the builders even richer

We need affordable housing, not condos and million dollar homes.

Most likely 100,000 new suburban houses and unaffordable urban condos. Sutcliffe is just more of the same status quo.
