A local council on the NSW South Coast is investigating whether it can charge holiday home owners additional rates and use the money to create an affordable housing fund.

Mayor Amanda Findley said the money would go directly towards addressing the region's housing crisis. "If people turned around and said, 'I'm going to put my home up as a long-term rental', they would not pay additional money into the fund," she said.Housing crisis at emergency status

Will Amanda’s tree house be taxed also is that what she needs to know

I’d rather we turn the lense on how these councils waste money. Get rid of the dead wood, let’s improve performance and with all that money saved build affordable housing.

It’s called a holiday home for reason. Somewhere I can retreat to anytime. Lots of caravans sitting around. Why do the not rent them out? Same reason. Who wants someone in ya retreat home that’s full of everything need. From clothes etc etc. Australia is coming very unaffordable

We have a housing crisis so why not add to it by having 180,000 more people into the country as migrants?

good idea but would need to make sure they not drug addicts or criminals living in these long term rentals, would need to push them out area and have people that actually work to pay the rent

What's the salary of that Mayor?

Goodluck, legally.

The owners already pay taxes on those homes. Buy your own homes and rent them out or charitably rent them freely.

If we are to maintain local super markets/ retail infrastructure etc, we need to encourage high occupancy rates. If property owners choose not to tenant their dwelling. A vacancy tax introduced with proceeds going to a local council retail infrastructure subsidy fund.

LyndaFrench19 Seems an idea worth trying.

I thought it was called land tax.

Great just what we need, more hopeless and unemployed people on our beaches….

Shoalhaven council increases their rates every year and we still have awful roads, terrible drainage and no green waste bins for our houses. They're laundering money at this point.

Legalise squatting. This will force owners to not leave 1m+ residential dwellings empty.

another cash grab by an pointless level of government, the so called poor people that cry for free housing couldnt afford the rent anyways, this country always looking to punish people who do well for themselves

I have family in that region & this same hypocrite, ignored Councils own housing stress report 5 years ago & hiked rates by 29%=rents went up by the same amount. Findley has done NOTHING to address homelessness or housing stress=Green is the new blue in Shoalhaven.

If you need urgent rental relief you should approach a public hospital mental healthcare unit for free accommodation and free meals others do why not NSWHEALTHCARE blacktownhospital

that's so unfair. People are already taxes. There times over in addition to housing purchase tax. Income tax, savings tax, spendings tax.

So much for the Lucky Country hey?

Yet these people pay rates to the council.

I think a special tax on Mayors and other politicians would be more effective.

Noticed locally that houses bought for demolition and development stay vacant for 6-12 months first while planning etc takes place. Maybe a useful resource if managed well.

'Councillor (Amanda) Findley tries to blame everything from the state government to council policies to the tide when it comes to opening the entrance.

The federal government already has a “holiday home” tax.

Every politician in Australia only knows punishment, fines and more rules as the way to manage things. No carrot always stick. No incentives for making preferable decisions.

Adding cost is stupid. More social housing is the ONLY solution.

It would help if Mayors and councillors would stop the abrogation of their fundamental responsibility to ratepayers; enforce residential zoning! ShoalhavenCC Right2Housing NeighboursNotStrangers

So investors won't build more rentals if there is little proffit? Great idea.😜Let's import 200,000 every year, that'll fix it.

Already pay land tax on second property, tax on income from rent, council rates and GST. They would tax farting if they could (they probably will)

the half capital gains tax would be useful to banish

Her glasses. Mmmm.

There us no housing crisis. Talk to Banks and developers. Anytime govt comes to support Australians developors/builders/business will increase the prices making it difficult. This is business/developers/builders problem

Just do it already AlboMP

Merge/abolish councils. Put saved billions into public housing.
