ICYMI: “This is a policy that is going to lead to un-housing people. It already has.”

Several residents of Charlottetown’s tent encampments have said they have chosen to sleep outside because the city’s shelters do not allow pets.

MacKay said the Residential Tenancy Act does not prohibit pets. He said he has also heard stories of problematic pets, including some that have bitten other tenants. “It’s a complicated situation. And we often hear landlords putting forward no pet policies as a blanket policy because they don’t want to deal with those nuances,” Lund said.

Bernard introduced an amendment to the legislation that would have voided pet prohibitions in rental agreements. This amendment was voted down, with both Liberals and governing Progressive Conservatives voting against it.
