Opinion: We know homelessness is a housing problem, but we still need innovative solutions [Opinion]

It is no secret that homelessness and housing affordability are closely linked, and that they are the most critical issues facing the San Diego region today. While these are constantly in the news, particularly controversial headlines have abounded as of late due to Gov. Gavin Newsom’sthat he planned to “pause” the latest round of state funding for homelessness due to the lack of results the municipalities produced using previous funding they had received to address homelessness.

Without pointing a finger at any one policy or municipality, we can safely say that we need to continue the progress on regional collaboration to maximize our impact on our homeless population through the services we provide. The Regional Task Force on Homelessness, which I chair, serves as a funder, regional convener, promoter of best practices and policy leader in San Diego County’s collective efforts to end homelessness.

Among Colbern and Aldern’s noteworthy findings was a clearly observable correlation between municipalities with tight housing markets and those with serious homelessness problems.

We also know that homelessness is a mental illness problem as well as a drug/alcohol problem.

it's sad and dangerous. some live so close on the street to the cars that when they get out of their tents, you might hit them on the road. too dangerous
