The federal government won't help provinces for disaster compensation if housing is built in flood areas.

Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault's comments came after the Ontario government announced plans last month to open up the protected Greenbelt to development.removing land from 15 different areas of the GreenbeltGuilbeault says he's "very worried" by what he's seeing in Ontario. He says some of the lands where housing or commercial development is being proposed are in floodplains, and flooding is the top climate change cost in Canada.

Ford says he's encouraging Guilbeault to "do his research" and notes that it's the responsibility of any builder to ensure they protect against development on floodplains.Ontario created the Greenbelt in 2005 to protect agricultural and environmentally sensitive lands in the Greater Golden Horseshoe area from development.

Ford had previously promised he wouldn't touch the protected land, but his government now says the plan to open up the Greenbelt will help with its goal of building 1.5 million homes in 10 years. Both Ford and his housing minister have said the provincial government did not tip off developers ahead of announcing changes to the Greenbelt after media reports suggested that some prominent developers who are Progressive Conservative donors stand to benefit from the move.

Ontario's integrity commissioner and the province's auditor general have been asked to investigate the government's Greenbelt plan.

Lived in Winnipeg in the 90's, if your house was situated outside the flood zone, insurance companies nor govt covered cost of damages. Even living inside flood zone didn't guarantee coverage for damages due to flood of '96

Well municipalities shouldn't allow for permits on flood plains..

The east coast know about this after the govt said they would only match any money's donated. All the while funelling money to friends and themselves. If Trudeau represented us he would act like us. Which struggling to get by. Instead he's all over the world living lavishly on us

Nor should they. If the Ontario Government ignores floodplain delineation data from Environment Canada, then they are on their own. Unfortunately for those of us in Ontario, it means we the Ontario taxpayers who live on higher ground will be footing the bill.

Does that include the BC Lower Mainland?

jake_sisko Good for the feds!!!! 👍👍👍👏👏👏👏

The sad part is that Fatty Ford will be long gone when clean up is needed.

Who the f would buy, or even build anything on a flood plain

And nor should it. If you build in a place that is prone to flooding, then you deserve to lose it all. You shouldn’t be able to purchase insurance either. If you can, then your rates should reflect that potential and not leave it to the rest of us to “bail” you out

Advice to builders... Build homes on high ground. Every home we have had has been on high ground for a reason. (I can't scuba dive)

Good!!!

Yes, this is called rational behavior and accountability.

Did we forget Hurricane Hazel’s 81 deaths in Toronto?

Good

Good. fordnation lied about not building on the Greenbelt. dougfordisaliar iStandWithTrudeau

Makes sense.

Dont worry, Obama built a swanky home along the coast. Apparently he's not worried about climate change so why should we

He’ll find a crooked insurance company to cover his $$ launderers & speculators. Then it will go bankrupt unable to pay, voila HONEST HARDWORKING Ontario taxpayers on the hook for fordnation & friends, while he GROWS TENT CITIES. onpoli

And that’s why Alberta is in the works of the sovereignty act

Well, there goes any help for most cities as they almost all are in flood plains.

Hurricane Hazel was natures way of telling us all not to build on Green Belts. Green Belts absorb water, prevent sudden run off from overflowing floods zones, and most green belts property is in flood zones.

🧐

Will Justin extend that to first nations who build on flood plains?

Good. And they shouldn’t. Don’t build there!

Dougie you look so sad. Why is your developer buddies pissed you screwed them over to or is it maybe the Federal government has a heart and wants to protect protected land and help Ontarians keep there protected land and make you keep your promise. Your word Dougie is gold

Yes that’s called common sense.

Nothing new here…

They call it the Greenbelt for a plethora of reasons. This, being one.

About the only thing they've gotten right.

Nor should it.

Good call. Stop wasting material building shit in stupid places. Who can contest that?

Pictured: A misshapen potato.

Wowza!

After 2000 years, Roman structures are still standing today. Yet 21st century can't build anything without it being washed away.

So stop forwarding tax dollars to the federal government and deal with it provincially. All they’re going to do with our money is ship it offshore.

In bc last year. You build on a floodplain It floods LOL and call it 'climate change'

DougFordIsACriminal

Nor shud they. Don’t build in areas that are prone to flooding. Duh.

Nor should they. What an insane suggestion that feds should be on the hook for greedy Premier Ford's actions.

So ... everything within the Niagara escarpment? I mean, why limit ourselves to the last few hundred years?

Well time for a new govt voteoutliberalscoasttocoast

Nor should they.

Trudeaumustgo Anyone who has dealt with a conservation authority and the arbitrary drawing of 100 year flood lines on a map will understand the frustration of landowners trying to do the right thing.

Why would the Feds help conservative mobsters who are already stealing tax payer money? fraudnation

I see CTV is spreading misinformation, what happened to CTV they use to be about journalism.

Lol we call it climate change....

Good. It is about time we stop expansion into known areas of volatility and leaving the homeowner on the hook for poor planning by officials.

Only in Quebec.

Dont the feds show up . Take some pics . Walk around in hard hats and leave?

Good.

I agree with the feds on this one.

Reasonable.

So if Ford gives developers to destroy the Greenbelt and in turn, my family home gets damaged/flooded or destroyed, the federal government would deny fixing my family home on their mess up?

skirri …is any of PEI insurable ?…sea level rise will take it off the map so ?…

No worries, corporations will be helped. Voters, citizens, residents do not matter, at least not till next election.

It most certainly would be less costly in the long run to start relocating people out of flood, zones, and often earthquake fault lines, regardless of how valuable they think their property is. There's something inherently stupid about where people choose to live

Neither will insurance companies. The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) estimates six to 10 per cent of Canadian homes are uninsurable due to flooding

Flood mapping by provinces shouldn't be so far behind. It's not just the municipality or county that should be responsible for making sure the information is readily available to the public.

Good

Conservation Authorities won’t allow housing to be built in floodplains.

Nor should they. fordnation has stripped the environmental agency’s of their oversight and enforcement abilities and any and all issues related to flooding and the like fall squarely at the conservative government’s feet.

I’m sure banks will be happy to give mortgages for uninsurable properties….not 🤦🏻‍♀️

Why are provinces APPROVING construction in flooding areas to begin with? Provincial politicians need to pay for damages out of their own pockets … they knew more about the land ‘DEALS’ than the Feds. The feds only use taxpayers money…

who gave them permission to build in the 1st place?

So forgive me if I wrong but maybe bill 23 shouldn’t have been based for a great number of reasons….leave green spaces alone.

jake_sisko Ford is a mobster and he doesn't even try to hide it. If it doesn't put money in his pocket he doesn't even try to understand it. Or he blames the feds.

Sounds pretty much like common sense to me!

What about lakes they have drained and established towns in? Asking for a friend TrudeauMustGo

Wonder if Douggie knows Deez 🥜? CP24

Hopefully that includes greenbelt, that would look good on ford and his buddies he tipped off

Good. fordnation's friends want to build on the flood areas of The Greenbelt AND his gov't wants compensation when houses downstream are overcome by flooding. 🤦🏻‍♀️

They absolutely shouldn't. The greenbelt was never intended to be sold for housing. This ghoul needs to go.

Sooooo....would this be considered flood areas or climate change?

Why would you buy in a flood area

Why is it picture of a provincial leader and not a federal leader if the article is about the federal government?

Oh Doug, I think you are backed against a wall, I believe the Fed's before you any day OntarioStrong OntariansStandTogether HandsOffOurGreenBelt

But what if the OntarioPCCaucus is already a disaster? Can the Feds help? Asking for a corrupt Tommy Boy clone who loves selling dope and lying off cops and working with the Vaughan mafia.

It should also be a requirement at time of purchase to specify whether or not a home is on flood plains. I wonder how many people get screwed because they simply don't know at time of purchase.

It someone is knowingly building a house in a flood area why would that person expect any financial support after the building is flooded? Duh... Build a floating house instead...

mmmm, that puts a dent in your grift Dougie

The plan to build houses in Greenbelt is absurd. We elected criminals. Hope there is an investigation or a judicial review of the process

Only a fool would knowingly build housing in a flood plain… this probably explains why fordnation wants to do it.

I hate sup-pumps. They always fail a least once. Worst time is in April/May. Lots of water, wind, power outages.

They would if it was Ukraine though.

sorry developer buddie$

But the federal government will send billions to other countries just to get votes!!!

I kinda agree with this. It’s kinda dumb to build where it’s confirmed to be at risk of flooding.

Good! I won’t buy a house on a flood plain because I’m not an idiot. You be you, but I’m not buying you new granite countertops when your basement floods!

Will banks be providing loans to buy houses built on flood planes?

As it should be

And?

Sound move.

It is stupid to build in flood prone areas!

1) I don't see a problem with this 2) Why does fordnation always look like he uses mayonnaise as hair gel?

Lot of whining people who think it’s unfair the guy who got the most votes won the election. “But a ton of people didn’t vote”. So what? What, we should give the liberals the election win, even though even more people didn’t vote for them?

only the gov can zones land for commercial/residential development

Tell the feds to F off, handle it yourself.

Lmao people build beside the lake and then freak when they get wet lmfao

Good

Yaaaaaaaah!

Rightfully so

So who really suffers in the end, the 'suckers' who manage to scrape together enough money to buy a home from an unscrupulous developer, and don't realize it's a flood plain. This Bill 23 needs to go

all provinces could, however write legislation stopping development on floodplains. like Alberta did. cdnpoli

Totally agree!

TiMoudou What would the feds help? It’s a no brainer!

Basically, Ford is selling Crown land which may be swamp land.

Good. Everything fordnation does, he expects the Feds to bail him out. JUST SAY NO.

hbardell1 I’m thinking he doesn’t care.

Building in uninsureable areas is 'more affordable housing'. That's a promise kept, folks.

The federal government isn’t an insurer

16Canuckfan Well good

As it should be.

I'm agreeing with the feds on this one. Don't build on floodplains and you won't have to worry about such things.

Duh, no brainer. 🤷‍♂️

Good

Good.

every spring the river floods in west island montreal ... do the Feds toss them any money every year ?

Uhh, how about simply research the area you're moving into... Also, realtors should be advising you on this. This is on the buyer.

Will the federal government help provinces find homes for all the refugees they bring in?

Newsflash- the conservative government won’t give two shits if those houses flood either, and unfortunately, the majority of homebuyers won’t be smart enough to see that the house is built in a flood plain. Another genius move from DOFO fordnation

Does that include Surrey and Abbotsford areas where a lake was drained before the land was developed?

Rizzy232 opens greenbelt to builders, then says they wont get disaster relief if something happens.

Why would they!

This is the way it should be. Govt should be fixing infrastructure not peoples homes. If you build or buy on a flood plain and can’t/don’t get insurance, that should be on you.

My guess is that home owners of said properties won't be able to get insurance either..

what is wrong with this federal government! it is time to dump them

The Greenbelt is comprised of 2million acres. Ford has released 7,400 acres. I am pretty sure they aren’t all on flood plains. I agree the Fed’s should not provide disaster funding to any property built on a flood plain. I suspect they would not uninsurable as well.

Yeah, yeah, yeah … let’s see what happens when there are floods in downtown Toronto, New Brunswick, Winnipeg, Vancouver, or Ottawa.

What qualifies as a flood zone? Al Gores fake predictions or reality

Perfect!!!

good! and homes shouldn’t be built on flooding areas anyhow.

They were?

If all of us got together and planned a work strike until Ford squashes this whole thing, how many days would it take? I mean every one of us. All trades, all healthcare, corner store employees, call centre workers. No one works. If that's what it'll take then count me in.

I'm sure insurance would be expensive for these houses.

Oops, did you forget to mention that to your developer friends Teflon Doug?

Why would provinces build in flood areas to begin with? That’s just dumb.

Good

Why would you build housing in flood areas? Really? And wtf would buy them? What a waste.

Good.

fuckdougford

Makes sense

That seems like common sense and it’s hard to believe he had to be told.

good. if you can afford to buy one of those monster homes, you can fix it yourself.

right move. either enjoy the ocean view or have a house that lasts more than 3 weeks

Good… if you choose to build in a high risk area, you should be on your own.

fordnation oupps Dougy are your friends getting nervous corrupt

My book, Hurricane Hazel, One Family’s Story, is about what happens when you put houses on floodplain. The disaster happened here before and will again if this goes forward.

Great!!

I would think Insurance Companies might take issue as well

There is a reason we don't build in flood zones. The greed of these people is beyond belief.

Until 2025. Then the Goof Rainbow Nazzis are going to be voted out

How about Gatineau? This is going to get interesting.

Huh, guess they won’t be helping BC then. All those houses and businesses in Sumas Lake.

🤦‍♂️

Good

Hurricane hazel raymour drive

Rightly so.

good it's about time. tired of continually paying for waterfront properties too

'Ford said it's the responsibility of any builder to ensure they protect against development on floodplains.' Ford, washing his hands already. And who da ya think would end up paying those disaster rehab costs? lol You and me!!!!!!!! It will get worse!

KenSmith001 It will be nice if there was an agency charged with looking after development on floodplains and enforcing setback requirements... Oh. Right.

What would you expect from Trudeau he is to busy giving to other countries and helping everyone but his own . Think before you vote next election.

Makes sense.

I agree with this one actually. Why should tax dollars be used to bail out the people who built or bought on known flood plains. Insurance rates gonna be 🔥

Hey maybe Doug gonna live in the flood area (what emoji to use?)😋

I am fine with that.

And will the federal government continue to rebuild homes on flood plains on reserves that require evacuations every year?

Nor should they.

Good.

Guess where Doughie plans to build affordable housing? Yup.

Seems fair

Good. Dumb enough to build and buy in a flood zone then too bad, so sad.

Uh oh...Doug's developer buddies are getting nervous...

& why would they.

Yup! Stupid, ill-conceived, environmentally unsound development in flood-plains or sensitive areas should never be developed unless the Government or officials in charge are getting personal kickbacks from the developers?

Losing our Ontario Green Belt farm produce of 135 football fields/day to the Ford CPC_HQ OntarioPCCaucus coalition has caused inflation higher than the Russia/Ukraine conflict

VictoryRenfrew Logical

That's what insurance is for!!

Good

didnt ON just do a reassesment of flood zones .. expanding many

Big disaster and any fools who buy in these areas will be regretting it . One flood and price of the property will be plunged

Beware to all the folks buying Greenbelt land, it’s been closed off for development for a reason. Doubt insurance will cover flooding either. Good job Dougie fordnation

Ford 'Lets build houses in flood plains', also Ford ' If the area floods, i'm not responsible'

Ford is deliberately screwing us all and laughing all the way to the bank. It's pretty sickening.

Like Abbotsford BC.

Makes sense

I mean...why should they? I don't know why anyone would really want to build a home in a flood zone, but if they're stupid enough to do that, why should the govt pick up the tab?

Now let’s see what insurance companies say….I have a feeling Ford is championing to build uninsurable subdivisions across the greenbelt. Buyer beware

Good. They shouldn’t.

Breaking News: Doug to announce Building on Flood Plain Incentive plan- Homeowners will be given one time $99 allocation to use at their discretion for home repairs. Putting money in your pocket. That’s the usual game plan right ?

Choice for Doug Ford! Threaten Ottawa with adopting the path of Alberta. Easy way to convince Conservatives.

'Premier [fordnation] says Ontario has no such plans' rhymes with 'Let's get rid of the lawyers and settle this on our own. They will only steal your money. You're going to lose everything in your life savings.' memories

Good!! Than do not build in this areas

They shouldn't help them out... it's a flood plan for a reason

Not enough of a deterrent to stop Ford though

Blackface Trudeau only helps third world dumps because he needs the refugee votes.

This does not seem unreasonable.

So, heres the plan, lets flood the Greenbelt!! I got my lil shovel, lets go!

Doug Ford probably won't be around by the time the houses are built and occupied. Developers already got their money. So does Doug really care about this ?

Hahahahah give us our money back

Flippin dip Shi. He’s opening up wetlands for housing.
