As homes along Lake Erie gain notoriety for having ice crystals cover them following a nastyBob Gurnham lives in the community of Crystal Beach in Fort Erie, and his house backs onto the lake; he stayed with family in Toronto as the winter storm passed through before Christmas. Gurnham said when he first saw images of his ice-glazed home he thought “it was a practical joke that someone painting using their computer.
“We’re very concerned about the effects of the ice on our building structure. It’s a big unknown what happens as we get into the thaw,” Gurnham said. “Some of the ice has started to fall and it sounds like a bomb going off.” Helen Filipe, who has a cottage in Port Colborne, also stayed away during and returned on Boxing Day. Right now, Filipe’s property seems to have no damage from the storm, but she expects that to change.
Strong winds during the storm brought water on land and onto the homes along the lake, according to Environment Canada meteorologist Lucas Alexopoulos.
Normally when you live by water flooding and things like soil erosion should not come as a surprise.
When you chose to live on a lakeshore, you chose the risks. This has been a prime example of the impacts the lakes can have on property. Flooding, ice, wind damage, erosion. That's why insurance is high for those owners.
