GEORGE TOWN: The duration of service for most of the 24-member Penang Island City Council (MBPP) will be extended by six months next year, says Penang housing, local government, town and country planning committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo.

"It will be announced during the first week of January," he told reporters in Komtar on Friday .

When asked how many councillors would have their tenures extended, Jagdeep did not divulge further details and just said"most of them". Of the 24 MBPP councillors, 10 are from DAP, eight from PKR, two from Amanah and four from non-governmental organisations. The 24 councillors in the Seberang Prai City Council comprise 10 from DAP, nine from PKR, two from Amanah and three from non-governmental organisations.

It is believed that the extension of their tenure is linked to state elections in Penang, which needs to occur before August 2023.
