ICYMI: 'It was like a family, no matter who you were. There were always people coming in and going out of our homes,' says 93-year-old Ralph Roberts of Brigus.

“There were very few decorated houses or even streets. But outside, it was a winter wonderland. There was more snow than you could ever imagine. You never got out of Brigus unless you shovelled your way and there were only a few cars. So, we never travelled much,” he adds.“It was like a family, no matter who you were. There were always people coming in and going out of our homes. It was a great friendship with people,” says Roberts.

The typical gifts from Santa Claus would be a pencil and a colouring book, says Roberts, who had two brothers. Afterward came the central feast, where Roberts' mother usually cooked a chicken, lamb, or roast beef, whatever fresh meat was available from a local farm. But there was never any turkey with all the trimmings, which is expected of today.
