Opinion: San Diego homelessness statistics are not just numbers on a graph — they're our neighbors [Opinion]

We asked readers and writers in our Community Voices Project to share their wishes and dreams for 2023.As we head into a new year, my wish is to see the community band together to support policies and solutions to homelessness. It may seem daunting, but if we work together, it’s an achievable goal., California accounts for 30 percent of the country’s population of people who lack housing, more than double the state’s share of the U.S. population.

Open shelters that have a low barrier to entry are one such type. These shelters, which have a number of beds that people experiencing homelessness can sleep in on any given night for any desired period of time, allow our neighbors in need to find safety and shelter on their own terms. Whether it’s because of post-traumatic stress disorder, substance use disorder or another behavioral health challenge, many people may not thrive in a low-demand congregate shelter. Other people experiencing homelessness may distrust the system.and Father Joe’s Villages’ Street Health and Outreach teams can be instrumental in reaching people who may not be open to shelter programs.
