The Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness outlines the policy proposal in a new report

Tim Richter, chief executive officer of the CAEH, said the subsidy is helpful but often leaves behind people who have the greatest need, especially as its implementation varies between provinces and territories.

The CAEH is releasing the proposal as an unprecedented homelessness crisis is unfolding, said Mr. Richter. Low-income Canadians have been hit hard with increasing rental prices and high inflation, while financial relief programs tied to the pandemic such as the Canada Emergency Response Benefit have ended.

“This is, in many ways, a slow motion crisis that happens kind of invisibly. There is no major, dramatic event like a fire or a flood, but the impact is precisely the same. The cost to the government is about the same as the worst natural disasters, but the loss of life is actually bound to be higher.”

Brittany Hendrych, spokesperson in the office of Housing Minister Ahmed Hussen, thanked CAEH for its work and said the federal government is open to considering proposals from partners. She said the Liberal government is taking meaningful action to address homelessness through the National Housing Strategy and various affordable housing initiatives.

Maybe instead of us paying for empty hotel rooms the rooms could be made available to the Canadian homeless instead of… asylum seekers.

CAEHomelessness Some prov. govs cut the shltr port. of prov disability & income supports - supports that are already under the poverty line. Ex. BC-$375to$75. This proposed Fed ben on top of keeping prov shltr costs the same will be the only way those ppl have any chance.

Here is what I do not understand. There are so many homeless on our streets already. Should we not take care of them before we bring in even more immigrants. Where exactly are they going to live?

I was born and lived most of my life in the same area. Worked for 29.4 years at a federal job. I will be on the street soon, because of both , shortage of rentals, or the price. Imagine that kicked out my home town. Makes me angry but mostly sad.

Canada, long seen as a refuge for refugees rendered homeless by war, environmental catastrophe, oppression, now CREATES homeless citizens IN Canada via an unabsorbable immig rate that renders housing unavailable/unaffordable, denying millions a basic need. This is human rights abuse
