Victoria police are warning commuters to avoid a stretch of Avebury Avenue north of the Fernwood neighbourhood due to reports of a gas leak Monday.

FortisBC says crews were called to the 2500-block of Avebury Avenue around 11:30 a.m. for reports of a damaged gas line.

Police and firefighters went to the scene and blocked off roads in the area, including Bay Street between Fernwood Road and Forbes Street – and along Avebury Avenue between Haultain and Bay streets. BC Hydro crews were also at the scene Monday, and workers have told CTV News that a power outage affecting about 1,800 BC Hydro customers in the area is related to the damaged gas line.This is a developing story.
