You can ask that question of almost any sector of the social and economic landscape, from education to health to urban housing, writes JJ_Stellies

Try to answer this honestly. Do you think the state of the country’s overall infrastructure was better in 1993 than in 2023 ? I posed this on my Twitter feed and 89% of respondents voted “yes, definitely”, while 11% said “no, better now”. Of course, these Twitter polls are not representative of the general population, but 2,410 respondents are worth taking seriously.

Now I do not know who the 11% are, but I suspect they live under rocks in the Karoo because news from the wealthiest city on the continent is pretty dismal: weeks without water, hobbled by daily electricity outages and holes like craters in more and more Johannesburg roads is not what we had on the eve of democracy...You’ve always trusted us to help you navigate the world. JJ_Stellies This article and tweet should be deleted. But it was always about the views and the likes. What an embarrassment JJ_Stellies is. Please, hou nou op gevreet koop.

JJ_Stellies We need more critical voices like JJ in other fields, such as economics, to question the SA post-Apartheid economic policy path that has produced persistent low growth and high unemployment, poverty and inequality.

JJ_Stellies I’ve read comments on this article and listened to an interview with JJ. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that JJ is a SA national treasure. He’s an independent deep thinking intellectual. One may disagree with him in a debate, but the debate is always richer with him in it.

JJ_Stellies I have been visiting SA each year for almost 10 years. I have seen improvements in most sectors over the years. Could it be better? Yes. Is corruption causing delays and problems? Yes. Was SA 'better off' during Apartheid? Hell no. Delete this article and tweet.

JJ_Stellies Let’s answer the question

JJ_Stellies The root of the infrastructural problems we experience now can be traced to the last 10 years of NP rule -- deregulation of road transport, neoliberalism etc. The ANC, for all its talk of 'transformation', left that system in place and even extended it

JJ_Stellies Now THIS is the stupid racist shit we need to fight. Whomever decided this was a good idea, and then convinced others to publish it, is what we need to fight. RockReeds I trust we can at least agree on this specific instance?

JJ_Stellies This c🦝🦝n just misses being 'Baas' favourite boy'

JJ_Stellies The mere fact that aparthied was a crime against humanity should mean that anyone who romanticize it must be charged with sedition.

JJ_Stellies No..as Khureng dweller...it's worse.I am saying this because during apartheid government my village was having enough water and there was sisal company close to the village but currently we are suffering..since this change currently we can spend months without a drop of 💧

JJ_Stellies Emotions aside. The question really has to be asked.

JJ_Stellies These questions makes one celebrate the ANC. Life is much better now. Prof is a bit lazy on developing questions that will create a meaningful debate. Maybe he was better off and is being nostalgic.

JJ_Stellies This professor has been a lost cause for sometime and I think he’s even a danger to himself For an academic and an old man like himself, you’d expect him to know better I gave up on him when he went on an unprovoked attack on the UCT VC

JJ_Stellies I think a more important question is what has the ANC done with the R30 trillion (R30,000,000,000,000) in taxes they have collected since they came into power? This?

JJ_Stellies Here is ChatGPTNFTs answer

JJ_Stellies Is UFS better off now than before him? 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

JJ_Stellies This old man went from racists' hunter, slayer, basher, false prosecutor to Apartheid infrastrucure apologist to bashing people who live in the Karoo. I'm from Karoo, and I did not vote in his stupid Twitter poll. And, the Times deems it fit to publish an erratic thought leader.

JJ_Stellies Those who are subscribed should copy and paste

JJ_Stellies Sies maan.

JJ_Stellies White media always likes to entertain 🐎 💩 like this when it comes to the history of suffering that black ppl have been thru

JJ_Stellies Awaiting for Prof’s employer to institute disciplinary process for bringing the university into disrepute SOON.

JJ_Stellies Aren't you embarrassed to write this Jonathane?

JJ_Stellies This just proves that most of the people leading us today, were never oppressed by apartheid. They read about it like they still read about the experiences of poor black people today. It is sad. Apartheid cannot be the best, the services were for the few.

JJ_Stellies Be honest, do you miss apartheid?

JJ_Stellies The Master now and then wants reassuarance from the slave, that the slave is still loyal to him. JJ_Stellies

JJ_Stellies JJ_Stellies you have been running this narrative of a 'better' apartheid for too long now.. I was still in the SRC when you ran this narrative in a Robben Island facilitated discussion and you stormed our after being confronted.. Stop this narrative!

JJ_Stellies Yes I am better off. My village has electricity, no more mud houses, more children passing matric, more graduates. If they can solve the water issue and roads then my life will almost be perfect. Ohh I'm a graduate thanks state funding and working

JJ_Stellies The white population can help the black population, but they need opportunities... the ANC needs to shift away from Socialism, there's many secrets that can improve SA economic performance, create employment but economic reformers never get any opportunities to make a difference.

JJ_Stellies

JJ_Stellies Truly journalists and the media fraternity in this country is tired, they no longer want to deliver factual and accurate news. There is a lot to hate this government for but they are definitely better than Apartheid.

JJ_Stellies Insensitive and wicked!

JJ_Stellies You are pissing on legacy and those whose lives were lost fighting Apartheid. A leader of society to say such is scandalous.

JJ_Stellies For times live to even green light this is very telling.

JJ_Stellies How did this man become a professor? He lacks gravitas, he’s extremely emotional. What’s his speciality? This is embarrassing. Rudimentary analysis. The Twitter platform is really exposing myopic folks.

JJ_Stellies Typical SA media giving a pseudo academic a platform.

JJ_Stellies And yalls go on to pick up this picture as if this is something new. Did this not exist during Aparthied? A whole supposed professor penned this, and a whole editor approved it? WOW

JJ_Stellies Says an Apartheid relic crying over amper Baas privileges, VoetsekJonathanJansen

JJ_Stellies Jonathan Jansen is an unrepentant racist.

JJ_Stellies Coloureds that look black on the surface. Gevaarlik.

JJ_Stellies JJ_Stellies you are a disgrace!

JJ_Stellies Unfortunately I was not in SA during Apartheid. So every „experiences“ are obsolete.

JJ_Stellies Who is JJ_Stellies trying to please here

JJ_Stellies Jansen clearly suffers from Apartheid Stockholm Syndrome, poor madala is getting soft in the head now.

JJ_Stellies He's a horrible human being. Glamorizing a crime against humanity. I am so appalled 🤮

JJ_Stellies ANC's failures have made Apartheid cheerleaders BOLD

JJ_Stellies I'm surprised by this at all. Prof Jansen comes from a community (coloureds) that voted for the Nats in 1994. In 1994 majority of coloured people voted for the National Party

JJ_Stellies This is truly disgusting. I'm not even going to read it?

JJ_Stellies They trying to profit from Black outrage, they wanna trend so bad so more people can click on the article..what a bunch of losers.. my opinion of our media is already in hell this just cements it😐

JJ_Stellies The Twitterati & policing the internet 😂 Nothing wrong with the question, JJ_Stellies Better & Apartheid will never coexist for me, I'd phrase it this way: is the status quo as bad or even worse than those evil days AS FAR AS LIVING CONDITIONS ARE CONCERNED FOR SOUTH AFRICANS?

JJ_Stellies The poll should have been directed to the millions of SAns in rural areas that didn't have access to clean water & other essential services in 1993. JJ_Stellies We could never compare current conditions to the brutality that came with living under an Apartheid regime.

JJ_Stellies

JJ_Stellies The only thing of colour the man doesn’t critique so disconsolate is the “man” himself, he’s either unawarely insensitive or he’s sponsored.

JJ_Stellies Farking Redneck. Misplaced privilege makes him to write such bullshit.

JJ_Stellies Uncle Tom, jy nodig net 'n paar poesklappe oor daai vet gevreet van jou.

JJ_Stellies Romanticism and nostalgia of a period during which crimes against humanity were committed should never be published or entertained, even under the guise of academic freedom. Quite frankly, this should be removed. The same would happen if the subject was the holocaust.

JJ_Stellies You wouldn’t have been able to hold the leadership positions you’ve held during apartheid. You need to retract this horrific article.

JJ_Stellies How can the paper publish this nonsense? How does the editor think this is okay? Apartheid was evil People died, people lost fathers, mothers, children How dare you Times how dare you

JJ_Stellies The problem with jansen is that he doesn't seem to be qualified to have these discussions. He has seniority in operations and management of academic institutions and so falls into these positions based on that and not his knowledge

JJ_Stellies A newspaper and academic who thinks that anything was better under apartheid is sickening. For one APARTHEID was a crime against humanity. How do you have the gall to even publish this?

JJ_Stellies

JJ_Stellies Scraping the bottom of the barrel. The insensitivity to the historical suffering of Black people under colonialism & Apartheid by the media, half cooked academics and vile unreformed racists will further undo 🇿🇦. Records are available for a reason and real academics use them.

JJ_Stellies wow JJ_Stellies ...to answer your very very stupid question, yes....there are human rights now!

JJ_Stellies I dare you to ask the same about the holocaust.

JJ_Stellies This man is so disgusting 🤮

JJ_Stellies Definitely something a hack like Jonathan Jansen would write

JJ_Stellies During apartheid there was no access to electricity for the poor blacks, loadshedding was not even in anyone’s vocab. No tarred main roads in the rural areas. Yes, ANC could have done more to transform communities, put an end to poverty and inequality instead of normalizing it.

JJ_Stellies Which economic landscape? AlanHirsch2 might be worth helping SA here.

JJ_Stellies Ay wa lapisa maan. Such a viewpoint is subjective & lacks historical context. While some may have experienced certain privileges or stability during apartheid, this was a system built on systemic racism, oppression & segregation recognized 🌏 as a gross violation of human rights

JJ_Stellies Coloured people didn't have to carry passes. Coloured people also benefited from the racialised welfare system. The state maintenance grant of R700 per child (up to 2 kids) benefited Coloured people & explicitly excluded Africans.

JJ_Stellies For you guys to even put this up is revolting to say the least.

JJ_Stellies The picture herein is a very accurate depiction of EFF socialism & ANC communism.. voters, be careful what you wish for..

JJ_Stellies This is deplorable and the paper shouldn’t run with this. Apartheid was a crime against humanity and you wouldn’t ask the same about the holocaust. A piece like this would be blocked by apartheid govt. Jansen, an affirmative action beneficiary, couldn’t have made it this far.

JJ_Stellies You and Adam Habib are tailored from the same rag. This explains why you let off those young Afrikaner white supremacists with hugs.

JJ_Stellies Apartheid was most evil and humiliating. Your question is so irrelevant today and am wondering as to what is it that you wanted to achieve by asking. We are never going back there.

JJ_Stellies

JJ_Stellies I was born in a public hospital, Edendale Hospital PMB, went to public schools and did not rely alarm system or private security at home under apartheid. My children need medical aid, semi-private education & CHUBB/BLUE for safety. Apartheid was terrible, kodwa....😢mangithule 😢

JJ_Stellies Yhoooo yes we are better off 💔💔💔

JJ_Stellies We typically don't congratulate the fish for its ability to swim
