A former Brisbane councillor claims she was dumped as part of a “conspiracy” orchestrated by senior members of the LNP because she could not be relied on to exert her powers to benefit certain property developers.
At the time, the corruption body described the fact the complaint was made public as “disappointing”. While stating Richards did not contend the beliefs were true, her lawyers alleged in the claim documents that the four men believed the chair could “enhance or retard” the success of town planning, rezoning or property development applications before the Brisbane council and take advantage of their position to benefit – or exact retribution against – particular property developers and business people. But Richards “could not be relied upon” to use her powers in that way, her lawyers allege.
Richards’ defamation claim also alleged a separate statutory declaration was written that falsely claimed she had organised a Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund grant for the Kenmore-Moggill RSL Sub-Branch on the condition the money was used to hire a business operated by her friends. Richards claimed she resent the email, but was called by Schrinner’s deputy chief of staff to be told “‘LNP headquarters’ was still complaining that they had not received a withdrawal of her application for endorsement”.
