A new $18.4 million modular housing project is opening in Saanich, to offer 52 housing units for homeless people in Greater Victoria.

, this is one of six projects initiated by BC Housing that ultimately aims to provide 280 supportive homes for people experiencing homelessness in the region.

In addition to housing, the modular housing units in Saanich will offer “wrap-around” services that aim to support those living there with counselling, medical attention, and two meals a day. The site will be managed by a local organization, Our Place Society, a local organization that seeks to help the most vulnerable in the community.

“They’re well positioned for compassionate leadership that’ll make Albina a success,” de Vries added. In part with the Rapid Housing Initiative, de Vries says it’s a good example for the future of building in the province.Sign up for our newsletter to get breaking news and daily digests sent to your email.“The build was quite fast, it was extended a little bit due to some geotechnical issues but it kicked off in 2021, pretty rapid all things considered,” de Vries said.“They’re built in a factory in Kamloops, where they can construct these things 12 months a year.

Burned to the ground in 3..2......

We’ve gone from giving them old buildings to building them new buildings

I really like that our tax money pays for people to live in a brand new place that they don’t care about and destroy the units, obviously they isn’t all. I’ve worked in these places and you can tell who appreciate what they have but the ones who don’t are disgusting.

must be nice to have a brand new unit, I feel for the hard working people that won't get this oppurtunity. Canada has become the haven of the losers

The copper will be stripped in 2 months.

It better not rot.

Does that include purchase of the land, or just construction cost?

This is so needed !

Based on single occupancy that is $354k each and $24k each per year to maintain. Plus approx $14k per year in GIS or equivalent disability payments. This is 50 people imagine the costs for the thousands in BC still waiting to be housed.

Let’s all Hope those that have the privilege of occupying them, will treat them with the respect required to maintain them.

Wonderful!

Wow, why can't Saanich approve housing for real people as fast?

These places are incompatible with urban environments and need to be taken outside the city to cheapest real estate location possible By allowing for the cheapest possible expenditure per person You can help more people And inflict less collateral damage to the community

That place is going to be a dump in 5 years. Who really thinks this is a good idea?

Pretty sure they could have done something similar for less $

And a whole 2 blocks to the local elementary school!

Over/under for how long it takes them to burn it down.... ?

350k per unit. Yikes..

So you get a house if you don’t contribute to society but if your a middle class, contributing citizen you get to pay 2000$/month for a roof over your head. 👍

Such a colossal waste of time, money, and resources.
