The governor is pushing a plan to mandate more housing in those suburban counties, some of the nation’s largest and wealthiest

Now, far from treading with caution, she’s pushing a proposal that may be radioactive in the bedroom communities that dot the region: A plan to mandate more housing in those suburban counties, some of the nation’s largest and wealthiest.

But Hochul seems undaunted by the political risk, arguing the suburbs have failed to do their part to add housing supply, with a “potentially catastrophic” impact on the state’s ability to compete for jobs and residents. “There’s a lot of resentment when the state or a regional entity tries to come in and tell people how they should make their communities. It’s not a winning strategy,” said Laura Curran, the former Democratic Nassau County executive who was defeated by Blakeman in 2021.Bruce Blakeman said suburban residents do not support Kathy Hochul’s plans to force the region to add new housing or face zoning penalties.

Republicans are already pouncing. Zeldin was in Albany on Monday to rip the proposal, calling it “Hochul control, not local control.” Hochul is pleading with local leaders to embrace her housing push for the greater good, saying it still gives towns and villages flexibility in how they choose to meet her goals., which the governor has attributed to housing unaffordability. Her administration argues the suburbs are not immune to strains on the housing market — a point echoed by housing and business groups and even some local leaders opposed to the scale of the push.

Hochul’s effort is being celebrated by housing groups who have long called for New York to pursue the kind of substantive state action seen in other parts of the country — and implement it in a way that includes sticks and carrots. Her proposal would impose a 3 percent growth target for New York City and surrounding suburbs to be met every three years. By comparison, over the last three years, Long Island increased its housing stock by just 0.6 percent, while the lower Hudson Valley grew by 1.7 percent.

North Hempstead supervisor Jennifer DeSena, a registered Democrat who ran as a Republican, said the governor’s proposed requirements “sounds like a parent talking to a teenager.” Residents, she said, are “concerned about losing the quality of life they paid for.”

Vindictive bee-ach.

Good idea, let’s export people who are F’d up beyond belief due to NYC’s stupid policies of the last several decades out of NYC to the local communities so every small town can have big city urban blight . If she had suggested this before the election Zeldin would be gov.

Do you like that or New York… you may, as will address her as heil Hulchol.

Hochul wants to destroy the suburbs with low income housing and section 8 housing! She going to destroy long island and home values. Show me one neighborhood with low income housing free of crime and trash? She is only making Long Island more red. Long Island should split from NY

Liberals stop or don’t complain, you voted for this , no denial .

You voted her New York.... You get what you vote for.... And it's not the 'Just' the Rich that live in the suburbs.... The Media's inherent Racism, will have you believe.

Instead of creating affordable housing in NYC and expanding rent control, the Governor wants to throw a bone to developers, thus guaranteeing that Republicans will win the state next election.

People will leave. Taxpaying people and the state will be like Detroit - a shell of a once great place.

If she is looking to commit suicide, she should build affordable housing in Chappaqua. 🤣😂🤣

Destroying lives as fast as she can.

Fake carrot trick.

Repopulating from shithole cities

You voted for her. Do not complain. Its only the beginning. he is here for a while. Relocation is your only salvation!

Lol she wants all of ny to be a shit hole. Underfunded,

The rich white liberals won't be too happy about the ghetto moving into their backyard.

Good put some real hard working Americans in those districts who vote based on all the issues and not just their tax breaks
