A sinking feeling on a much-loved estate

Residents of a Blackburn estate have been left angry and confused after being told their homes will be demolished. A number of properties on the Whitebirk estate are set to be knocked down, with housing association Together Housing saying many are affected by subsidence and will "become dangerous over time".

Emma-Leigh claims that Together Housing aren't listening to the community and have not thought through how the demolition will affect families in the long run. She said: "I'm the eldest of seven kids. The youngest is five and my mum has lived in her home for 23 years. She might be losing it, but she doesn't want to move.

Kelsie Jones is another resident who isn't directly affected, but her loved ones are. Her mum and dad live on Worcester Road, which is said to be the main area affected by the planned demolition. "My mum can't move away because her support is here," said Kelsie. "She has 17 grandchildren here and she doesn't drive and my sister and I don't drive.

He added: "We've been told we're safe for at least another year, but I need to know because I like to plan. Then, on top of that, I'm 52 - will I get another mortgage? There's also not a lot of houses to rent in Blackburn." "As part of this, we have identified a number of properties, many affected by subsidence, that we are proposing to demolish as part of the next stage of placeshaping work. These demolitions will remove buildings that will become dangerous over time and others that will allow the community more options in deciding future plans for the estate.
