New Zealand residents are warned to prepare for one of the most severe storms of the century as Cyclone Gabrielle continues to cause power outages and flight cancellations across the North Island.

NZ Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has urged citizens to take the threat “seriously” following records of 140 km/hour gusts in the country’s north on Sunday afternoon.

Thousands of homes on the island are being told by authorities to expect further prolonged power outages as most flights from Auckland continue to be suspended.
