Esther Idigu says new proposals, named in honour of tragic toddler Awaab Ishak, will bring relief to families like hers living in sub-standard properties
An amendment to the Social Housing Regulation Bill has been proposed by the government ministers mandating landlords to swiftly investigate and fix damp and mould issues within newly imposed time frames.” Esther Idigu, a tenant with L&Q, one of the biggest social housing landlords says proposals will bring welcome relief to families like hers who have had to endure poor living condition and have had their concerns ignored by social landlords.that since becoming an L&Q tenant in 2007 she and her four children have been trapped in inhumane, squalid living conditions including worsening damp and mould which led to her youngest daughter being hospitalised.
Idigu added: “These new laws will bring a lot of relief to families in poor housing, it’s definitely needed. The fact that these landlords are going to be forced to do this shows they are not capable of taking care of tenants or provide them with their basic human rights of providing somewhere clean and safe to live.”
However it’s expected that a public consultation will take place later this year to establish the time limits for landlords to resolve issues.
