The federal government will likely be forced to change its housing plan, with both the Opposition and Greens raising concerns about the $10 billion fund.

The Coalition will finalise its position on the bill today but have not flagged support for itUnder the proposal, up to $500 million a year would be used to fund the construction of new homes, as well as repair and improve housing for Indigenous communities and provide additional crisis accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence.

The houses will be paid for through the returns on investment from a to-be-established $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund. "Labor's centrepiece housing legislation locks in permanent real-term cuts to housing funding, does nothing for renters, and will see the shortage of social and affordable housing grow, seeing the housing crisis get worse," he said.

The Greens also want to ensure that all homes built under the program meet minimum accessibility standards to support people with a disability. The Opposition is yet to finalise its position on the bill, but is expected to make a decision when the party meets today.Deputy Liberal leader Sussan Ley said she had questions about the fund.

Freezing rents, and hikes in rent assistance, would be the best way to take pressure of struggling people... especially, at this CLEAR time of crisis. Something has got to give, or HOMELESSNESS might get out of hand for a long time to come. Action must be taken, B4 That happens.

Good that the greens are weighing in on economic and spending policy. If they can keep doing this, in a non reckless way; ie, WELL considered ECONOMIC points of view, then they have a great chance of gaining more votes, in the face of the void left by the lib/Nats. STRONG GREEN $

But, someone (taxpayers) still needs to pay. Greens seem efficient at spending other people’s money. Low cost housing needs to be built 50sq blocks, 30sq houses (1or 2 levels). Double Hebel, steel roof, concrete floors. Indigenous housing single level larger 40sq house, masonry.

Labor & Greens deserve each other. Pray where do we find $5 bn each year ? Fo we cut Health Services, Education, Welfare or perhaps best of all move to a user pays business model.

Sussan Ley: Perhaps not by creating yet another off-budget vehicle of spending… because we won’t be able to blame Labor for debt and deficit

$5b a year. Lol the greens have their own head up their arse

Can I get a free home if I decide to stop working and become vulnerable?

Knew as soon as the announcement was made that this wasn't going to be enough! Good on the Greens! Funny that Govs can 'find the right' amount of $$ for lesser things but pissy amounts when it comes to these issues that Matter! Do Better!

Housing is a state government responsibility. Why is no one in media pointing this out to an overreaching government?

Better start immigrating builders, plumbers and electricians instead of baristas, cooks and aged care workers!

Do not buy the Subs, no problem, Houses create Assets, Subs do not !!!

Decrease immigration - you’re a racist! Decrease spending - you’re out of touch! Build better infrastructure - takes too long! Spend more on gov housing - nailed it 👌🏼

Greens want '$5 billion a year to construct homes instead of the proposed $500 million' Another example of Greens sabotaging good Labor policy with ridiculous extremist demands that will never pass! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ auspol

More time wasting by opposition parties and independents, to delay solving the housing shortage.

There is no fixing the housing crisis when you are bringing in over 300,000 immigrants per year & over 25,000 so called refugees on top of natural growth. You can’t build your way out of excessive growth, but you can make taxpayers continue to fund your anti environment policy

We need to make sure these houses are ready for the 20,000 new refugees.

500m a year is fuck all itll do nothing but maintain the status quo

I'm all for $billions being spent on more social housing. What I don't understand is why our government is not spending the money for more housing for all Aussies, not just Aboriginal Aussies?

This is great news. This will send cost of living and inflation soaring whilst making tradies, politicians, investors and unions super rich.

I have to agree with the Greens 😱 $500m per year won’t even touch the sides. Also cut back on immigration.
