Now the couple live in a rented property that is managed by a rental agency who organise repairs and maintenance. The work is being completed, “but most jobs are slap-happy,” she says. “You always have that dread in your heart, that the landlord can serve a notice to [leave] at the drop of a hat. It’s always a worry.”
For renters in retirement who are struggling to pay for accommodation, there is government help. Those with low incomes and savings of less than £16,000 are able to, and may also qualify for other support through pension credits. And although there is a cap for working-age housing benefit claims, that doesn’t apply to those over pension age, meaning they’re prevented from being forced out over rising rent alone.
Rising numbers of people entering mid and later life are still renting: the biggest percentage increase in the 10 years to 2017 was in households in the 45 to 54 age group, rising from 11 per cent to 16 per cent of renters. And a number of those are former homeowners who fell off the property ladder due to a change in circumstances, whether that’s divorce, financial troubles or ill health.
