The $700-million Resilient Homes program, announced in October, is expected to offer about 2,000 buybacks for the purchase of a homeowner's house and land. Federal Minister for Emergency Management Murray Watt said the program aimed to support homeowners in the Ballina, Byron, Clarence Valley, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmond Valley and Tweed local government areas to re-establish their lives after the floods.
Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation chief executive David Witherdin said an offer was sent to homeowners on Thursday, February 16. Owners would be crazy not to take this offer. They wouldn't be able to get insurance. And taxpayers are not going to pay for the rebuild anymore anyway.
