Opinion: San Diego's new high-rise and backyard housing plan deserved more community scrutiny [Opinion]

I am severely disappointed by lack of interest in evidence-based decision-making by the majority of the City Council.

Four council members saw the problems with massive, non-routine changes and wanted Sustainable Development Areas out of the municipal code updates for further study. But such a reasonable request was unacceptable to the five members who gave no evidence-based reasons for supporting the Planning Department proposal. Their support was purely knee-jerk: housing now, housing everywhere, damn the consequences. Hundreds of written comments argued for further study.

The Sierra Club, the League of Women Voters, Neighbors for a Better San Diego and respected retired San Diego State University urban planner Nico Calavita asked that the provisions be taken out due to poor planning principles that undermined the city’s Climate Action Plan. The City Council signaled that it supports willy-nilly, head-in-the-sand housing development that kneecaps the climate plan but is a boon to developers.

'high rise'

This option is truly shit

that's not a high rise, this is a high rise:

opinion: no it didn't

Five stories is a high rise?

Is this a highrise for ants?

The LEFTIST/SOCIALISTS in the San Diego government are attempting to model our once great city after LA or NYC. Equity is a force by big brother, Equality is personal drive to improve the lives of self and others.

Lifestyle yuppy “environmentalists” who care only about their own aesthetic pleasure without giving a damn about the poor, housing costs, or the environment. What else is new.

If you don't like living in a city, move to the suburbs. Cities are supposed to be dense with housing

the building pictured here is hardly what I would call a high rise

Translation: “I don’t want any new housing built so let’s get peoples opinions to delay it indefinitely”

No it didn’t actually need to be talked to death by the usual anti everything NIMBY complainers

Are these more luxury apartments that no one can afford? Or is it a low income complex where homeless people loiter in front in huge groups? SanDiegoCounty CityofSanDiego Either way I can’t live there. And most people can’t.

Opinion: San Diego cities must respond to encampments with housing, not by criminalizing homelessnessA tent is a tent, but for many it’s the safest, most private space someone may have while experiencing homelessness. No one seems to care we've tried everything we have a 2600 a month income and still nobody will give us a time of day almost two and a half years now Criminalizing is important. Enforcing even more so.
