All boarding home operators will now be required to pay a $500 licensing fee.Dallas City Council voted Wednesday to tighten regulations of the city’s licensed boarding homes in response to concerns over residents’ safety and quality of housing during a time when North Texas’ affordable housing is already scarce.
At Wednesday’s meeting, the council amended the ordinance to double the required distance between boarding homes. “For folks that are elderly people that have cognitive disabilities, physical disabilities or people that just can’t take care of themselves, living by themselves is not a healthy option,” Walker said in an interview with. “When we help someone get off the streets, we’re going to find the best option for them. And for many folks to live in a supported environment is much better than an isolated, unsupported environment.
North Texas isn’t building enough new affordable housing as it is to keep up with the demands, Walker said, which means cities like Dallas must create “low-income housing opportunities” like converting existing housing into boarding homes.
