Q&A: Why is the apparently harmless idea of 15-minute cities exercising conspiracy theorists?

If you live in Ranelagh in Dublin, you already live in a 15-minute city. Photograph: Bryan O'BrienThe 15-minute city is an urban-planning concept developed by Prof Carlos Moreno of the Sorbonne Business School that was quickly adopted by environmental thinkers and activists around the world.

And most town and city neighbourhoods across the world had it in the days before urban decline and food deserts, when people began driving long distances to huge shopping centres. Some people on the internet have decided that 15-minutes cities are actually a form of “climate lockdown” and that the shadowy elites who run everything will soon be keeping us within 15 minutes of our home, probably with military checkpoints.

Because its not harmless

It’s so wrong to pigeon hole any dissenting voice into the ‘conspiracy theory’ basket. It’s also lazy journalism that cleverly bypasses actual concerns.

Features writer for Irish Times thinks everyone lives in Dublin as if that was somehow a justification for this lunacy. I dont think these people actually know what the term conspiracy theory actually means. Bit like everything is far-right, nothing but buzz words now.

Why does the Irish Times always support the government position on absolutely everything?

Why do you frame anyone questioning a new idea as “conspiracy theorist”. It’s really getting tiresome now. Just do your job of analysing new policies instead of poking at people all the time. What has your paper become? SadToSee

It's not a harmless idea

‘Apparently harmless “…like lockdowns ,masks, school closures, etc.!!

People pay enough in tax.. this is about banning of cars (removing constitutional right to freedom of movement).. or WEF-run Govt intends fining people for driving outside their allocated zones (more robbery & removal of constitutional rights). Its lockdowns by Climate Ch Hoax

I’m sure you had to search high and low for a pic of 2 doors that would reflect the Ukrainian flag colours IrelandisFull

Open air prison?

I would love nothing more than to live a neighborhood of Frankfurt here in Germany, where I have everything within a 15 minute walk. They are there, I just cannot afford them!

How original. NarrativeNatter Have you figured out who committed the NordStream terrorist attack 5 months ago?

Because it is more egregious over-reach of state intrusion into everyday life, predicated on exaggerated or wholly invented emergency, and coincidentally similar to the distance limits imposed on people during the criminal lockdowns.

Perhaps if we weren't restricted in our movements for 2 years then people might be more open to this, what you think? Starts with 'no need to leave' and then becomes 'you can't leave' - already happening in Oxford.

Sorry, Irish Times, you media sorts have overplayed yer hands and used up the phrase 'conspiracy theorist' and now it means nothing at all like what you hope it means. Shucks.

Irish Slimes gaslighting again ? Plus ca change.

The auld Conspiracy theorists would latch on to anything. Any word about the rise in All Cause deaths since the injections started...

I see the memo has been sent to start condescending the hoi polloi before any significant resistance takes hold

Yellow and blue doors

Well if the Irish times says it’s ok it must be ok

Because its not harmless

Because the idea of 15 minutes cities = high levels of surveillance of the general public and digital ID/Currency to enforce the idea

In Oxford the plan is to implement the 15 minutes city concept PLUS fines for using cars in certain areas without permits.

Any chance we can get rid of the IT for good, what a rag of a paper. Gaslighting the Irish is all it’s good for these days.

Because they're fücking idiots!

Why is using critical thinking being deemed a conspiracy theory. To think that those in power act from a purely altruistic point of view is completely delusional.

It seems to come with a lot of trojan horse baggage like what you're allowed to eat. Funnily enough I'd heard very little about it, yet the media seemed to jump the shark and say it was exercising people.

Why is the apparently harmless idea of everyone sharing not so harmless after all? Ask any ex communist country who seeming good idea turn to totalitarianism.

State of this 🙄....blue and yellow doors in picture too. What a rag

Because it's catchy and gets them a lot of attention like you're giving them now.

Sounds hideously dystopian- you can only drive your car to the town centre a few times a month. Its the start of climate lockdown and we must oppose the infringement on our basic human rights

Why is the apparently harmless idea of freedom so repugnant to the ?

At the same time that you are pretending that limiting peoples freedom to travel is harmless, you are running a piece with a NPHET member saying that Mandatory vaccination should have been enforced during Covid! You are pushing a dystopian 1984/Brave New World nightmare..

Bit like a lockdown forever.

Apparently harmless is a very ambiguous statement.

It's just another smear from Patrick Freyne, the unsavoury man who called Mel Gibson a conspiracy-theorising racist. Listen Patrick, vote Green if you must, but let us normal people live our lives as we see fit.

Funny this when this was predicted a few years ago people were called conspiracy theorists

It is not a theory - given people passes which limits their ability to travel is undemocratic as at least 90% of people don't agree to it - it is not fringe to be against it - how is it harmless if it severely restricts your freedom & destroys your livelihood?

Anyone who still believes the IT or RTE needs their head examined. Fake news.

“Aparently harmless “? Like the harmless injection and lockdowns ? Ahhh yep . Better try smarter narratives “slime times “ people of this island are awake .

Because we have the constitutional right to freedom of movement all over this country without restrictions, and 15 min Cities piss all over our constitutional rights... simple, nothing harmless about it, it's a control measure and not a conspiracy theory...

People get energised by the 15 minute idea , due to the streak of fascism in the Greens that ignorantly promote the removal of parking spaces by the thousands, the building of new congestion creating cycle lanes that are zero use to the majority that must commute by car.

Harmless? You're at home and trip and fall. You call an ambulance but the ambulance is prevented from responding promptly because the road is blocked off. Say you had a Gas leak? Who's going to fix it before the whole street blows up?

Maybe because it comes across as a decree one might expect from the Chinese gvmt? By whom, and how, would 'shops' e.g. be made locate in any given vicinity?

I think you might find over the last 3 or 4 years the 'conspiracy theorists' ended up being correct its all coming out that the experts weren't following the science!

Needing a pass to leave or enter town. Oh so harmless what could go wrong giving up that freedom to the government. What a rag

Because there's nothing 'harmless' abt being fined 4 driving further in ur own car, city & country & needing special permit to drive further that will be granted by the very people who don't want u to even own a car! Won't affect the elite/wealthy of course!

Oxfordshire protestors are labelled far right and racist for not wanting roads closed and fined for driving . Very odd the racists and far right would be against totalitarianism. Liberals you can't do this, can't say that, can't eat, can't travel, can't have an opinion . 🤡🥑

Because its all connected to the lockdowns, digital ID, coercion to have jabs and open borders and uncontrolled mass migration.

Will an Irish' journalist' ever again really question anything ?

Ask the Jewish people in Warsaws Ghetto why this is a Red Flag? You do realise they then say cant drive weekends etc? These unelected people are deviants and mad men held on tabs of greed and deviancy.

Human Settlement Zones & End of Car Ownership......hmmm sounds familiar 🤔🤔

Denying people their constitutional right of movement and imposing zonal restrictions and fines is harmless? What on earth is happening to our country?

The final headline ever the Irish Times are gonna write is 'Well, actually why you don not thing that communism is good for all of us?!!!' Save this tweet.

That's because it is an orwellian nightmare🙄we're free to move wherever we please without needing approval from anyone councils government etc. look at Oxford an absolute nightmare communism slowly creeping in this country too

Because 3 reasons mainly: 1. It is not harmless 2. It is not just an idea 3. Disfranchising people by calling them 'conspiracy theorists', 'right wing extremists' and fascist since 2020 means they are on to you and you just want to vilify people asking questions.

Some coincidence when the Journal is trying to debunk it too..

Coming from the same communist rag that told everyone the jabs were harmless.

Ah well 15 minute cities impinge on your freedoms. Just look at Oxford its a “trial” yet it has caused havoc on their bus routes, family’s & friends who live in “zones” they need to travel too & would need their councils permission to leave their “zone” the sheep will accept it

😂😂 everything.. litrelly everything they said is coming true

Problem is when the Times issues yet another one of its biased, more than likely unresearched , articles I question it!

Why do we have to import American crp into everything we do now? No one wants this and it is not needed here!

jordanbpeterson is one of those who are extremely exercised about 15 minute cities, as is johnredwood. Just seems sensible to me. I want to get everything I need most days without getting in a car.

Because they don't want to be tracked, traced and held captive within their allocated zone?

Because it's a slow creep to subjugation

Seems like an immediately provocative headline. They're resisting change, change can be debated, dissented, disagreed with. Sustainable transport and walkability are things some people just don't care about in their lifestyle. Some people actually like their car dependency.
