The proposals are in response to the Grenfell Tower fire and the death of a toddler in a mouldy flat.

The government said ensuring managers had appropriate qualifications would bring social housing more closely into line with other sectors providing frontline services, including social work, teaching, and health and care services., according to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.Toddler Awaab Ishak died in a mouldy flat in December 2020

Social housing campaigner Kwajo Tweneboa said he thought the proposals would increase professionalism in the sector. "We never gave up. We pushed for professionalisation and for robust regulation to ensure residents are treated with respect and humanity." He continued: "We know that many social housing residents are not receiving the service or respect they deserve.

You can always clean it off long before it gets this bad Or you can sit on your fat arse with your phone and hope someone else will clean it. GET OFF YOUR ARSE!!!

Put people that work in social hosing then standard come up ! Problem works 2 ways !

Parents require cleaning advice too

We have an unelected head of state with no qualifications

The council housing at the East_Riding council is so full of incompetent officers that the allow cowboy builders wreck peoples homes.

I wonder if the people living in these homes bear any responsibility for the mild and dirt?

My housing association flat as if last week. I live with 2 children.

Know how to run a social housing business would help.

Oh and the wee yellow meter designed to frighten YIU

We’ve a joiner, plasterer and painter running our HA fell on their feet and early retirment

Is this the real cause of child health issues rather than soft target being vehicles

Formal qualification in what?

What do you mean by “bosses”. Qualifications are usually a required standard throughout Housing Service structures at all levels

Being qualified doesn't mean they'll care.

You don't need to take an exam to know that property should be fit for human habitation.

How do you get mould in social housing? You live rent free. Surely you can afford to put the heating on? This just sounds like child neglect to me.

The question is, how does this solve the outsourcing, that is part of the problem? This happens because of bad decision making, we all see it as social tenants. Multiple layers, distance between tenant & landlord with old stock. Another headline grab, without solving the problem

They should have done from the beginning

No they need monitoring properly and those people need the training.

Why not private landlords aswell?

Need to be careful here.. You need to except there is an issue with lifestyle . Windows closed all winter.. damp clothes on radiators etc. People need to be educated.

Depends on if qualifications will be relevant or if u just need a degree in anything

Good idea

Or at least some education.

Like many people seeing story no doubt, my reaction is 'local housing stock were handed over to people with no qualifications or experience? WTF!'

They have no shame

As long as the government insist we live in the cold & block all draughts etc we’re going to see a lot more of this & not just in the social housing sector, particularly during cold wet winters when opening windows & drying washing on the line etc is just not viable

Or just plain eye glasses !!

It's a shame that it took the death of a child to get to this stage. Heart breaking.

Someone else with £50k debts that can never be paid off? Why would a Govt, even a Tory one, encourage useless debt that comes back to the country in 30 years woth compunded interest.

Could? Essential. They are responsible for lives and property. Take it further. Anyone wanting to be a landlord should complete a course successfully before being allowed to rent out. Now, there's a spanner in the works.

I briefly worked as a telecoms engineer last year, I went into some properties that I wouldn't even keep a dog in... Damp and black mould everywhere

But if they don't keep it warm it will grow mould usually a clean is all that is required. These folk too lazy to clean will want a bigger better house for free. Maybe charge them rent; they may determine to learn how to clean stuff.

Anyone involved in any type of construction should only be allowed to work on houses with proper qualifications- get rid of rogue builders, electricians, plumbers etc and there should be set costs. We the public often get ripped off and are left to pick up the pieces.

Q. How to remove mould pick 2 1. Apply diluted bleach/detergent rub vigorously. 2. Open windows during day. 3. Do nothing take to social media in off chance of getting a clean house. 4. Take landlord to court not mentioning your lazyness watching wet widows walls in cold rooms

Rubbish

Why? No one else in government, local or national, needs qualifications to do any number of different jobs.

Social housing inspectors in many councils don’t have formal qualifications. They carry out surveys, call them surveys, and don’t have RICs qualifications to their name. They are simply gaslighting their clients with poor conditions and waffle.

No shit it’s needed industry wide with checks and balances put in place! An actual housing industry enforcement body, not just councils left to their devices!

Or maybe they should give a shit!

Members of Parliament don’t need formal qualifications…

Absolutely agree, including all Local Authorities too.

That's labour screwed then.

I would say so. Some houses are so bad, and when reported, no one seems that bothered about sorting it, until Environmental Health get involved!

It took some Einstein workout that housing bosses should know what they are doing - other than being Accountants. Applies to so many other areas of the public sector where the bean counters have taken over rather than being knowledgeable about what an organisation does.

This is pointless, it’s the housing provider that sets policy and budgets/planned work schedules, a housing manager/officer can phone/email and scream their head off but if the provider is fobbing them off with excuses and time frames then no qualification in the world will help

The private sector needs to be scrutinised more as well, who looks out for their tenants and makes their landlord more accountable when it comes to mould and damp issues

Says Housing Secretary, Michael Gove, who studied English and later became a journalist who went on strike against his bosses.

You should have to be licensed.

Why when a building fails, does no one question the builders/developers, who inevitably take short cuts & use the cheapest materials when constructing them? All buildings should have a warrant of some kind guaranteeing their condition. Passing the buck isn't the answer !!

A degree of empathy might well be the best qualification needed.

I think so

Turnip management?

In sociology.

A plasters degree 😏

Good it might make them more accountable

Most do I think

Social landlords will be forced to get housing qualifications in bid to tackle poor standardsThe Housing Secretary said the changes will 'make sure social housing managers across the country have the right skills and experience to deliver an excellent service' Social landlords getting qualifications will make NO DIFFERENCE because social landlords were set up to be driven by profit, cost-cutting, as few human resources as possible, and doing everything on the cheap.
