More households can’t afford the stress and strain of home prices, mortgages, rents and inflation

with more people being priced out of homeownership and more residents hit with record-high rents, according to aanalysis of 2021 U.S. Census American Communities Survey data and local real estate.The cost of a single-family home in Dallas County has more than doubled in the last 10 years.

In 2019, only 2% of D-FW’s ZIP codes were considered affordable for households earning 80% of the area’s median income, or about $53,000, according toFor the first time, in 2021, more than half of Dallas County renters — 52% — were housing cost-burdened, according to the American Communities Survey. The Department of Housing and Urban Development considers households burdened if they pay 30% or more of their median income on housing costs.
