People with vouchers in Arizona fared slightly better, with an average 66% success rate across the state’s public housing authorities, though rates for individual housing authorities differed widely. Housing choice vouchers, formerly called Section 8 vouchers, are a form of federal aid that helps low-income families afford rent. They can only be used at properties where the rent is reasonable for the area. Voucher holders pay 30% of their income toward rent, and the voucher covers the rest. The maximum monthly subsidy amount for a two-bedroom unit in Phoenix is about $2,000..
