Blackpool's £50m investment in town's rotting buildings that 'can't happen due to red tape'

Rene Schaefer has a plan for Blackpool's derelict hotels. Backed by private investors from Europe, Rene, as well as many other investors, want to snap up the eyesores of empty buildings and transform them into self contained aparthotels, capable of housing every type of family dynamic.

Rene says the planning restrictions don't make sense, as similar style hotels already exist in Blackpool, and the restrictions are actively putting people off spending money in Blackpool. "The current attitude towards holiday accommodation in Blackpool is currently 25 years behind the times. I've travelled all over the world in the last few years, Melbourne, Australia, Sydney, Bangkok, Phuket and everywhere you go, these flats are what people want.

"One new issue is the dramatic rise in the number of properties in residential areas now being let for holiday use which has caused a significant imbalance, delivering holiday makers to areas without the facilities to cater for them, while at the same time removing residential housing stock from the market. For a number of years it has been clearly stated in the 'Blackpool Plan' that changing the use of a residential property to holiday use will require planning permission.

Rene explains that he lives in the area, and manages his properties with a team of workers who monitor cameras in the communal areas of his buildings. Despite having three different sites of holiday accommodation, he only deals with one 'party flat' every four months or so. "A few of my lads had expected to be on that job until Christmas, but it fell through. We're in limbo now and it had a big knock on effect when things like this happen."

hiltonholloway Isn't this article some sort of personal vendetta from a property developer? Is suppose the council's regulations come from national guidelines? No one knows what outcome of planning is until after they apply He wants a pre-approval. Unheard?
