"We found that Austin, Texas, ranks as the most attractive place for first-time buyers," Bankrate wrote in the report,"followed by Midwestern and Sun Belt metro areas that offer a combination of affordable homes, strong local economies and housing markets that aren't too frothy."
The report was created using 10 data points for the nation's 50 largest metro areas across four categories. Those categories are"affordability" ,"job market" ,"housing market tightness" and"wellness and culture" . At No. 12, San Antonio's best ranking was for market tightness, or how many homes are available and how fast they sell. The city tied for No. 20 in affordability. It was No. 30 in job market and No. 40 in wellness and culture. That last category was based primarily on access to food, health care and community services, including libraries and houses of worship.
Austin ranked first overall, followed by Kansas City, Mo., and Raleigh, N.C. Washington, D.C., on the other end, came in last, just barely beaten by Boston and New York City.
