The city is holding public workshops to help you find ways to knock down your tax bill — legally.

Because Texas has no state income tax, local governments and school districts rely heavily on property taxes to fund services and pay their employees.Your property's appraised value as determined by thedetermines your tax bill, and you can contest that appraisal. In other words, you can make the case that the district overvalued your property and it isn't really worth that much. Many such appeals succeed in reducing appraisals and tax bills.

In addition, you can apply for exemptions that reduce your property's taxable value, regardless of how your protest turns out.You can claim additional exemptions if you're over 65 or have disabilities or if you're a disabled veteran. Exemptions also are available if you use the property for agriculture or wildlife management.

This is technical stuff, and it can be hard to keep track of it all. That's why the city is holding workshops to walk people through how to apply for exemptions and how to contest their assessments before the May 15 deadline.Spanish and American Sign Language interpreters will be on hand. There's one from 4 to 7 p.m. today on the West Side. It's at the Ron Darner Park Headquarters at 5800 Historic Old Highway. Look for the Barrera Room.4-6 p.m., Bibliotech EDU, 626 North Flores St.
