Plans to double council tax for second home owners in Scotland

People who own a second home could be charged up to double the full rate of council tax under a new proposal

The proposed changes would enable councils to charge up to double the full rate of council tax on second homes from April 2024, bringing them in line with long-term empty homes. Currently, this happens if it is let for a total of 70 nights and is available to let for 140 nights in a financial year. She said: "That is why we are pleased to be launching this joint consultation, as we work to meet the shared aim of creating the right balance to increase the availability of housing and a taxation system that is fair for the tourism industry.

"Also given that the social housing waiting list is in the hundreds of thousands this seems to barely address the issue. But it is a gesture and a lot easier than implementing a serious house building programme for the next decade."

Another way to plug the hole of wasted tax money.

Always trying to steal any penny they can.

Hope this applies to all the MPs aswel but probably not 🚫

Won't affect second homes that are part used for holiday bookings over a set number of weeks. In the Highlands, Council tax is free, to encourage tourism. Second home owners who occasionally offer as holiday let are quids in as a result.

Excellent, hope the same is done in London

What communist nonsense! Do you pay double the roadtax when you don't use your car? It's your home. You should be free to do what you want with it. Just another socialist policy creep and attack to propertyrights.

Yet this ent apply to our new Tampon King. By some quirk. He is exempted. Luck? corruption? Immoral?

One way to recoup the missing £600K?

Shortage of migrant housing?

Which they’ll then pass on to anyone renting the second home and make renting more and more expensive

Fair enough if you ask me a house should be somewhere to live , not to make money off.

Ripping people off because they've fucked the finances up. The SNP have got a lot to answer for.

That will kill off some of the letting market and make it more expensive for what’s left.

Why don’t you you charge 100 times as a deterrent?

Any excuse to steal. Pure scum these councils, pure scum.

Completely pointless. Will make a difference with a relatively small proportion of the people who need housing. A distraction policy rather than fixing the real issue - creating adequate supply of good quality housing suitable to meet demand where people and employment need it.

Why is the answer to everything from second homes to emissions taxes in cities to charge people? If it was that bad then just ban them! It's always about making money!

Think it's aimed at holiday homes, not at landlords.

Pointless, it's the tennents that pay the council tax.

What about the ones who purchase a second home for a family member who can not afford to rent so only purchased out of compassion

U.K. has Triple council tax

...and triple it for triple home owners etc etc please.
