Perhaps the most famous — and notorious — of Canada’s official residences, 24 Sussex Drive, is a 155-year-old, 35-room home that’s served as the PM’s official home from Louis St. Laurent to Stephen Harper., the home and its four outbuildings sit on a 2.15-hectare lot overlooking the Ottawa River.
Between 2010 and 2020, $5.4 million has been spent solely on upkeep — $2.5 million on operational expenses, and just shy of $3 million on capital spending. Located within Gatineau Park, the 5.4 hectare property consists of a 16-room, 771 sq. m residence and 10 outbuildings.Documents obtained by the National Post list expenditures for renovations on the property since 2015 at $8.7 million — most notably a $5.7 million renovation project on the main residence completed December 2020.
Despite these improvements, the commission said Harrington Lake still needs another $1.16 million to bring its condition from “fair” to “good.”
It was done on purpose so they can get fancy new ones built. When the price to fix it is high enough public opinion will agree!
There should never have been any question to keep this residence in top shape. Can you imagine if USA leaders would have let the Whitehouse go to a state of disrepair!!! Doesn’t say much about Stephen Harper who was the last resident there!
