McManus told a council committee Tuesday that increasing the number of officers assigned to SAPD’s 18-member vehicle theft unit would help officers investigate these crimes — and find stolen vehicles. SAPD is already seeking an additional 100 patrol officers in next year’s fiscal budget, which the council will adopt in September.

Property crimes made up 71 percent of all crimes, with violent crime, which SAPD refers to as crimes against persons, coming in at 21 percent. On the whole, overall crime is down by about 2 percent in the first quarter of the year, a drop from 36,969 to 36,159 total offenses reported. Violent crime is down almost 16 percent from the first three months of last year, which McManus said was the result of a drop in assault offenses. SAPD recorded 1,321 fewer assaults from January through March compared to the same time in 2022, with 8,331 assaults reported in the first quarter of this year.
