The “not in my backyard” objections to new housing in the NDP government’s latest push won’t carry nearly the weight they once did

He made a move that applies only to one block of a Kitsilano neighbourhood in Vancouver. But the message can be taken as applying anywhere in B.C. — the “not in my backyard” objections to new housing in the NDP government’s latest push won’t carry nearly the weight they once did.

In other words: Don’t waste your time appealing to the courts — the government has decided this project will proceed. There’s a similar clause in the Housing Supply Act from last fall, which will set housing targets in select communities. B.C. will provide incentives to councils to meet the targets, but provincial authorities can override them if they fall short.

The Arbutus project in Vancouver has been the subject of 300 meetings and a six-day public hearing, he said, but “now there’s a court challenge. We’re never going to be able to build our way out of a housing crisis if we continue to re-litigate decisions that have already been made.” “Anti-development interests apply disproportionate political pressure on decision-makers,” said the report.

“I’m not saying single family homes are gone … they will be here as long as people can afford them. What we are saying is when a house comes down, it shouldn’t be an expensive, single-family home [replacing it]. There should be options for people.”

This is great. Now they need to ensure that housing is prioritized: Housing Tree Preservation Housing Archaeological interests Housing ALR Preservation Housing Parks purchase programs Housing Bike lane expansion

Great, will we see supportive housing in Shaughnessy? Point Grey? Kerrisdale? Southlands?

Take it to the Supreme Court of Canada.

Great!! Time to put some low income housing facilities in Oak Bay & other Victoria surrounding that think their too special to have low income homes.

Non Democratic Party living up to their name.

But the municipalities control the building inspectors. Can't get things done without them.

To all the right wing MAGATrolls on this thread. There's reasons why the bcndp are doing what they're doing. It's because local mayors and councils like the previous mayor and council in mapleridge fought the province and affordable housing tooth and nail.

The courts are independent of government, & the government of the day cannot dictate whether previous decisions will have a future effect or not. Not everyone who is critical of the NDP's new housing policy is NIMBY. Creating silos of poor/addicted/mentally ill is not good.

Looking forward to relocating in the near future.

Oh look! A leftist government reaching for more power over its citizenry. Quelle surprise!

My guess is Ravi Kahlon will never have to worry about some housing plan that will destroy his enjoyment of his home. Another NDP Hypocrite

You can see here how former dictator Lisa Helps is now putting her claws into provincial policy by advancing anti public hearing voices of the public, once again dictating to each and every property owner in the province instead of just yyj the bcndp needs to be voted out

Hating people who love their communities and who want to have voice in how they evolve. This won’t lead anywhere good.
