Representatives of the Valley Roots Housing Association speak with Premier Tim Houston and Housing and Municipal Affairs Minister John Lohr prior to a May 10 affordable housing announcement in New Minas. - Kirk StarrattNEW MINAS, N.S. — A project proposed by an Annapolis Valley affordable housing association will provide more housing options for people in the New Minas area.
Planning and design work has started on what will be the housing association’s first development. Community Inclusion Society executive director and Valley Roots Housing Association vice-chairperson Mary Fox said they aim to break ground in early 2024. She said their intent is to have at least 50 per cent of the units be “truly affordable”, meaning they wouldn’t cost more than 30 per cent of the gross combined income of the residents.
She said community engagement is essential to their plan and they see the need to ensure their affordable housing model is sustainable through support for residents and the availability of rental subsidies. “Part of my mandate as minister was to create an inventory of provincially owned land that could be used for housing."
