The desire for a house and not an apartment was one of the main reasons for not accepting,

Gardens that are too small and unable to fit motorbikes were just one of the reasons over 5,000 offers of social houses were declined in Ireland since 2021.

Houses being too small, bedrooms being too small and proximity to a previous partner were some of the other reasons social houses were not accepted, with Kildare recording the highest number of refusals at 38%, according to the Irish Independent. Apartments or duplexes were presented to some people as options, however, the desire for a house and not an apartment was one of the main reasons for not accepting,A poor internet connection and homes being in locations known for criminality or anti-social behaviour were also factors in the high number of refusals relating to a total of 25,000 offers of social homes in the last two years.

Dublin City Council had the highest number of refusals from those on social housing with 764 refusals in 2021 and 576 in 2022.Other reasons for refusal included lack of bathrooms, parking being too distant from the house as well as schools being located too far away from the home. Refusals on medical grounds were also common, the Irish Independent analysis found. Many people also said they were happier in their current homes and were unwilling to move.
