A floating home is seen on a lake in an undated handout photo. In addition to potential environmental impacts, “there is a huge concern around, ‘Are these things safe,’” said Cheryl Elliot-Fraser, president of the Gloucester Pool Cottagers’ Association. “As far as I’m concerned, why would you buy one of these things when they are being banned right now from Ontario’s lakes?”
The changes don’t apply to watercraft like yachts and cruising boats that are “self-propelled and steered independently.” Cottage associations are lobbying Transport Canada to stop allowing floating homes to be deemed “vessels.”
