Harris County Pets will temporarily suspend animal surrender and stray intakes due to overcrowding

A dog up for adoption in the kennels at Harris County Pets Resource Center on Friday, Feb. 24, 2023 in Houston. The facility is housing 767 animals, which means it's over capacity by nearly 300. About 40 percent of animals brought to the shelter are surrendered by owners, according to the county.Currently, all of the shelter's adoptable animals are free of charge. They are spayed or neutered, have received age-appropriate vaccinations and are microchipped.

The agency will revisit its policy Aug. 1 to determine whether it's possible to resume normal surrender and intake procedures.
