Apartments and townhouses make up nearly 30 per cent of homes in Australia, and some owners are feeling blindsided by strata fees which have climbed by up to 45 per cent in the past year.

Australia's growing population of apartment and townhouse owners say their strata fees have substantially increased in the past year

Home owners from across the country told the ABC they have received alarming strata bills over the past year. "And if I put my fees up, it might be 2 or 3 per cent once a year, and I need to look after my clients."Strata expert Michael Teys said the blame for rising strata fees lay with the rising cost of power and water, building and maintenance work, and skyrocketing insurance costs.
