The candidate forum by the League of Women Voters San Diego raised questions about pressing issues in the special election for county District 4

Four candidates vying for an open supervisor seat agreed on the urgency of solving homelessness, building housing and boosting transportation, but offered varying ideas on the issues at a forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters San Diego Saturday.

Paul McQuigg, 47, a Republican, is a Marine veteran and the sole candidate not born and raised in the region, said he’s committed to his adopted hometown. “When I entered the Marine Corps at 26, I was shocked to learn that there were still that were closed to women,” she said, adding that those restrictions prompted her to volunteer for a challenging training program.

“We need to have emergency shelter for people living on the street,” she said. “For too long we have put the burden on cities.” Reichert argued that building more rental properties won’t solve the problem, since some families shopping for homes move to areas in search of lower prices.Goldbeck said she recently bought a house using a VA loan, but said other San Diegans without that option should still be able to purchase homes.
