Five young boys and their father are presumed dead after a fire ripped through three houses on Russell Island, off the Redlands coast, on Sunday morning.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said one Todman Street home had been destroyed, while about 20 firefighters were on the scene extinguishing blazes in another two homes.Police Superintendent Mat Kelly said the family of seven – two parents and five boys – were at the house when the fire broke out.

“It’s really devastating for the community at Russell Island, and certainly for the emergency services family as well.” Despite the best efforts of neighbours and rural firefighters, the man and children were unable to be found in the flames and the house collapsed. “As you start to lift the roof off – the sheeting iron – then small fires often pop up again, but there’s still quite a lot of smoke, and there is fire still burning in parts of the property.”
